Untitled[edit]

It is not clear to me that some recent moves have been properly discussed. Previously the politician was the primary meaning of this name, now he is not, I am not sure why as he does look like the most important person of this name. PatGallacher (talk) 10:25, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A user carried out this move without discussion, see User talk:Tassedethe. I am not sure that hits are a particulary good guide to relative notability, I suggest we move back. Any comments? PatGallacher (talk)

(copied from my talk page comment} Last month there were 382 hits for John Penrose, 158 for John Penrose (actor), 46 for John Penrose (archer) and 79 for for the disambiguation page John Penrose (disambiguation). To me that indicates that that there is no clear primary topic per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, "much more used than any other topic covered in Wikipedia to which the same word(s) may also refer (significantly more commonly searched for and read than other meanings)".
Assigning a primary topic has to take account of how much often particular pages are accessed otherwise it can rely to much on the judgement of editors. This can be effected by WP:RECENTISM. John Penrose (politician) has no particular notability outside of British politics (and barely any within politics being an opposition MP only since 2005) and as such is unlikely to be the primary topic when people search for John Penrose. OK, I've had second thoughts, although I still think it would have been better to have consulted before making a move like this. The actor may not have had a particularly distinguished career, but he did have a significant role in one very well-known film, which could still be remembered in a few decades. The politician was only elected at the last election, for all we know he could lose his seat at the next. However we may have to revise this if he does go on to have a significant parliamentary career. PatGallacher (talk) 20:21, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
