Grammar

The grammar in this article is horrendous, to the point of the article being rendered useless. It is written in an unbearable, pedantic, over-punctuated style.

An example of this is in the first paragraph ("... implant removed to regain his memories back). Probably should remove "back" from the sentence, or go all out and proceed with "...regain his memories back and have them returned to his brain, reinstating them into his mind." Why is this article locked?

Japanese version

What are the differences in the Japanese version of the movie? I have heard it is a longer/alternate cut, but what scenes exactly are affected? Jordi·✆ 12:42, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I believe WmG has stated that the Japanese editing is close to his vision of what the movie should have been like, while the non-Japanese editing disappointed him.

The original version intended by Robert Longo and William Gibson had score music by a band called Black Rain. All of that was removed by Sony; they insisted on using their own music instead. On the Japanese version, only one Black Rain song supposedly remains.

Also, there were supposed to be more scenes with Street Preacher and Anna Kalmann. William Gibson mentioned a scene with Street Preacher delivering a sermon before a crowd of people. All that was cut, even from the Japanese version. I think the only scenes that remain are some extra scenes of Takahashi. The movie is a garbled mess, because of all the plot and dialogue that Sony cut out of it.

William Gibson also wrote how Sony excised the humor from the movie. We will probably never see the version the creators shot and intended, because of Sony's meddling.

Anyone out there have a copy of 2001? The scene where JM goes thru customs and the computer scans him looks like the physical interface to HAL out of 2001? I'd like to compare it but I don't at the moment have access to a copy the movie.

Regarding the Japanese version differences

(this list is not complete)

I can confirm the following as I saw the movie 3 times in Japan - basically the changes as a whole make the film darker and grittier.

(1) The start is different. The music is Stabbing Westward's explosive slow building (heavy drums) and then suddenly thunderous "Lost" from their 1994 "Ungod" album

(2) The start also has far far less beginning narrative text.

(3) the ending does not have the happy children's party with balloons ending in which Johnny gets his childhood memories back. That part simply is not in the Japanese version at all and there is no replacement scene - you are left unknowing what happens to Johnny next and there is no expectation he will get his memories back. It simply is not part of the movie.

- by the way points (2) and (3) are similar to differences between Bladerunner's theatrical release and the director's cut version.

From my memory but unconfirmed

(4) the Takeshi Kitano scenes in the US version when he first talks to "Shinji" (at his "office") and the last scene where Takeshi talks to Johnny before dying surprised me by their shortness compared to my memory.

Older than they think

Removed an innacruate assumption: "An idea from Frank Herbert's Dune series also makes an on-screen appearance - an assasin uses a nano-wire with cutting abilities. This resembles the idea of Shigawire." The idea is hardly original with Dune. --Noclevername (talk) 10:01, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Trad. arg.

A perfect example of accurate preservation of a statement not checked for accuracy can be found in this article. The very first version of this article contains the phrase: "It recieved little fanfare due to mediocre acting, hardly believable characters, and lack of substance/coherence." As far as I can tell, this phrase has not only never been checked for accuracy, but has only been expanded on. Not that it is even wrong, but for such a pivotal point as Reception to remain uncited is negligent. Anarchangel (talk) 01:03, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Toronto, Montreal

Why do you have to pat Toronto and Montreal on the back? You do not do this for movies where other Canadian cities in the hinterland are featured in films (eg: Halifax or Winnipeg), so why do it for Toronto and Montreal? Just to promote them? Then why aren't you promoting Canadian hinterland cities?

Gigabytes

The intro is a bit misleading, it says Johnny has an 80 GB capacity, but actually, he gets an upgrade on the elevator on the way to the job which upgrades his capacity to 160 GB. The amount the scientists have him store is still over (320 GB) but we should note this upgrade. Ranze (talk) 12:16, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Anime

During the time he is getting the 320 GB of data an anime is playing in the background and the camera keeps briefly cutting to it during the information upload. I didn't recognize it but based on the artstyle I'd peg it as late 80s to early 90s, probably something which recently got an English dub in North America unless the directors were savvy on something untranslated.

I tried looking to see if any film reviews happened to note upon which anime this was. Is anyone able to find one with a hint of this information? I think it would be interesting to include in the plot summary in parenthesis since it plays a focused role on the drama of the upload.

If no reviews have it, the only approach I can think is to make an animated GIF or two out of the scene and ask on some anime forum if anyone recognizes it. I propose an 'assume good faith' approach to a given answer unless it seems totally absurd (ie this obviously wasn't Ranma, it looked a lot darker, more serious, more realistic artstyle) or there are multiple answers or disputes to the claim. "regain his memories back" in the plot section. That's redunant. You either gain sth. back or you regain sth.

What else needs to be done?

I think I did a reasonable job cleaning up and expanding this article. It's still got problems, of course, but it shouldn't be a major feat to turn this into a GA. I don't like writing leads, so the lead is terrible. The plot, which was recently expanded, should be trimmed a little. That gigantic William Gibson quote box should probably be summarized. Like many people who read Gibson's Neuromancer at a formative age, I find Gibson's thoughts intriguing. I assume the person who stuck in that gigantic quote box is the same, but we can probably paraphrase that down to half its size. I might have gone a bit overboard with the reception. Looking at now, it seems quite... detailed. Maybe the last paragraphs could be moved into a different section titled "retrospective views" or "legacy". That would help somewhat. But what else needs to be done? Are there sources discussing the production that I missed? NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:00, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

Needs edit

The final sentence of the opening description doesn't make sense.

"In 2022, a black-and-white edition of the film, titled Johnny Mnemonic: In Black and White, which Gibson characterized as closer to his original vision."
