Lanner's name was just Joseph, as documented in his baptismal entry at the parish of St. Ulrich and his birth certificate. The additional names "Franz Karl" (which I deleted) are pure fantasy.--Suessmayr (talk) 07:29, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I wonder if there's another explanation. Wherever these names came from, they've been around a while. Grove's Dictionary 5th ed, 1954., gives his name as "Josef Franz Karl Lanner". -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 08:46, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Grove ("Grove's" is a misnomer) is wrong. It's really that simple. The statement "largely self-taught on the violin" is nonsense. There's no proof that Lanner didn't take lessons from a master.--62.47.131.48 (talk) 19:46, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I referred to "Grove's Dictionary", which is perfectly, 1000% correct for the 1954 edition, since its full title is "Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians" - which I can attest since I have had the hard copy 1954 edition on my bookshelves for over 40 years. Now, if I wanted to call it just "Grove", then that would be correct, and not "Grove's". About his education, we need positive proof that some master taught him, in order to counter the citations that say he was largely self-taught. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 21:29, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
