Questions[edit]

Did Portland Public Schools, specifically, exist in the 19th century? Not sure the wikilink is appropriate, if the sources simply say he was educated in public schools. Also, did he really represent multiple districts, or just two? My understanding is that reapportionment happens once a decade, so it seems likely that there was only one change during his 18 year or so tenure. Or if it was multiple ones, maybe it resulted from his moving, as well as reapportionment? This is all, of course, speculation..I will look at the primary sources, too. -Pete (talk) 00:49, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The source said "Portland public schools" and I know the 1st public schools in Washington County was formed in 1851, so its plausible PPS or a predecessor in interest did exist by the time Simon started school. Dict of Oregon hist also says Portland had a school by 1850, though it doesn't say if it was public or not or by what school district name it went by. With re-apportionment, it is once a decade, usually for the election 2 years after the census. So for the 1880 session he was in district 21 (re-apportionment in 1882), then for the 1889 & 1891 district 20 (re-apportionment in 1892), then district 19 for 1895 on.
