Notability[edit]

I've restored previous templates that were deleted without explanation, and added a notability tag. So far there is very little online to support notability, and sparse auction records establish estimates in the hundreds of pounds for oil paintings. Perhaps there is more there than I have yet found. JNW (talk) 23:24, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph Vickers de Ville

Born 1856

Died 1925

Country England

Joseph Vickers de Ville was a Wolverhampton painter of landscape and rural subjects.

He was an established artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy from around 1890 and also at the following:

Royal Society of Birmingham Artists - Full Member Royal Institute of Oil Painters Fine Art Society Glasgow Institute Royal Scottish Academy etc

He was elected a full member of the RBSA in 1917 and was well known for his Welsh views. Particularly of North Wales and also the Midlands, England.

One of his most highly regarded pictures is his famous depiction of ‘Cannock Chase’, Midlands.

de Ville was particularly noted for his strong Impressionist technique.

Past auction results show his works constantly bring strong prices at auction. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.14.72.126 (talk) 21:45, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There's no real point in continuing to edit-war about text until some sources are added. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 21:49, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think just about anything this editor contributes can be deleted pretty much right away. All you need to do is look at my userpage history and the history of most articles I've listed on my userpage and this fellow has been working away at some rather pathetic vandalism. What started off as a simple case of a new editor not understanding wiki policy and etiquette (per WP:BITE, has turned into a rather over-the-top assault on me and a few other editors plus some sock activity. All have been reverted of course, but I think it's safe to say there is no good faith editing here. This article is protected and maybe he'll get bored soon (although FisherQueen's theory is probably correct. I mean, why else would someone care this much about such a minor artist to make such an ass of themselves? It's all quite sad. freshacconci talktalk 12:50, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sources didn't check out[edit]

I have checked McConkey (1989), British Impressionism. No mention of Joseph Vickers de Ville. To be sure, I have also checked Wortley (1989) British Impressionism and McConkey (1995) Impressionism in Britain. No mention of JVdV in either. Really regrettable. (However I saw some pretty good paintings, so I had a good time :-). Cheers Enki H. (talk) 22:41, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've ordered the 1998 edition of British Impressionism. You've beaten me to it, but I'm looking forward to the book anyway. Well done on the research. I've emailed the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, but haven't heard back as yet. However, McConkey was the anon's trump card, and the anon lacks any credibility now. This artist is obviously of very little note. In the light of the false claims made above and the lack of any sources apart from work sold at auction at low prices, I'm beginning to wonder if De Ville really existed at all. I propose a speedy delete under A7 to save wasting any more time. Ty 00:22, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The artist is legitimate. Based on these images, the paintings are more Barbizon than impressionist [1]. Given the lack of sources, we are still in the same place as when this began. JNW (talk) 04:36, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What proof is there that the artist existed? There's only proof so far that works stated to be by him have sold at auction. Ty 04:48, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is all I could find so far, not much to go on [2]. JNW (talk) 04:57, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Checklist of Painters ... that you found is a list of artists for which the Courtauld's Witt Library holds reproduction(s). The book contains exactly the following entry on him: VILLE, Joseph Vickers de; British, ?-1925 - it's really just a list of names. Unless one takes the position that all 70,000 artists in the Witt library are notable, this alone won't save the article. In summary: a painter by that name exists, but even the sparse information in the article remains unsourced for now. Enki H. (talk) 14:07, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good. May I propose you enter that into the article? ULAN lists the birthplace and place of death, which is not in the article yet. You'll notice that the article is only semi-protected: once you login to your original account (User:D-MacDermott, I believe), you can edit and improve it. Cheers Enki H. De Ville at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.[3] All 4 images on the Bridgman site as above are credited to the Gallery, but this is the only one they've put online. Ty 02:45, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Great. It's a regional museum but it does establish that some of his paintings are held in a public collection. That is another fact that could go into the article and that can be sourced. Enki H. (talk) 04:58, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Link to show where some of his work are held in public places. You want page 35:
