pronunciation of name
[edit]what is currently given is ambiguous, presumably what is meant is for the vowel to be /u/ but I'm not certain. Someone who is familiar with this should fix it, I will try to find whoever added that transcription. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Telmac (talk • contribs) 21:18, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
- I am not familiar enough with the pronunciation notation to know if this is now correct. I know from one of his relatives that Krutch used a Germanic pronunciation of his name, and that he very likely descended from Germans or Swiss who lived in Wartburg, Morgan County, TN, which was a German-speaking community in its early days. The “u” in “Krutch” would rhyme with the “ew” in knew or slew, which in old notation (if memory serves) would be “oo” tied with the flat or ‘long’ ligature, as in “zoom” or “room”. My German is almost forgotten, but the “u” in gesundheit would be an example; NEVER the Americanized “hutch” or “crutch”. I hope someone familiar with the IPL or IPC, or whatever that notation is, will address this. I will attempt to contact Telmac, but I fear he may be taking a long, if not permanent, wiki-sabbatical.
