I'll try to fix up these links ASAP.Nonplus (talk) 02:45, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I plan on expanding the research and public views sections to make them broader and more balanced. Re: the section on the Muslim Brotherhood. This piece was republished widely and caused a bit of a stir and I'd like to at least have a sentence about the criticisms and responses. Nonplus (talk) 03:18, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

I'm going to go ahead and remove the notability template.

I think Wikipedia's notability criteria are a bit inadequate in this case because we're talking about someone who is a public intellectual and not just an academic. That said, the notability criteria for academics are themselves sufficient to establish notability in this case: "Criterion 7 may be satisfied ... if the person is frequently quoted in conventional media as an academic expert in a particular area. A small number of quotations, especially in local news media, is not unexpected for academics and so falls short of this mark."

The subject meets this criteria, having been regularly quoted by major media around the world including Foreign Policy [1], Agence Global [2], ABC News [3], MSNBC [4], Harper's Magazine [5], Reuters [6], Daily News Egypt [7], Kuwait Times [8], ABC Australia [9], IPS News [10], Al Arabiya [11], Christian Science Monitor [12], and by groups such as by Human Rights Watch [13], and the American Enterprise Institute [14], among others. There are also books, radio interviews, etc in which he is quoted or interviewed. Nonplus (talk) 03:18, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Self-published sources

[edit]

I'll do the same with the self-published sources template, with the following rationale:

  • Reference 1 isn't self-published, it's from Kent State University's Department of Political Science.
  • References 2-3 are self-published, which is acceptable according to WP:SELFPUB: "Self-published or questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves..."
  • References 4-7 aren't self-published, they're published by peer-reviewed journals and the New York Times. They're written by Joshua Stacher, but what he has written is after all the subject of the article. Nonplus (talk) 03:18, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
