Gay musician?[edit]

He's never explicitly said that he was homosexual, although he is popularly purported to be so. --Victor 03:32, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh he is gay, darling...when he was asked about it in an interview..he said "Lo que se ve, no se pregunta"..[[[User:Raniya|Raniya]] 00:44, 26 March 2006 (UTC)]

I was never comfortable with some of the interpretations from Spanish to English on WikiPedia.

Said Juan Gabriel when he was interrogated about his sexuality:

"Lo que se ve no se pregunta mijo. Yo no tengo por qué decirle cosas que a usted, como a muchas otras personas, no les interesa, yo pienso que soy un artista que he dado mucho con mis canciones."

It is translated in this article as:

"You don't ask about what you see, son. I don't have to tell you nor others, because it's none of your business. I feel that I am an artist who has contributed too much with his songs."

However, I think a more accurate interpretation would be:

"What is obvious, isn't questioned, hon. I have no obligation to tell you about matters that, like so many other people, aren't your concern. I think that I'm an artist that has given quite a lot with my songs. (...and don't need to explain myself to anybody.)

Juan Gabriel has decided that his music, not his sexuality, defines who he is. He has decided to make his career about singing, writing, composing and performing, not promoting the gay agenda, and I think his decision should be respected.

He spoke well for himself. His sexuality is nobody else's business, and interrogators need to clam up. I can't see how Juan Gabriel being gay would change the quality of his music either way.210.133.127.14 (talk) 03:10, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

210.133.127.14, while I'm not disagreeing with your general argument, you translated mijo as "hon", which definitely has gay overtones, instead of the article's "son", which does not. Though I'm not fluent in Spanish, I am a linguist, and I'm pretty sure that mijo is a way of writing mi hijo ("my son") when it's said as a unit. This would include idiomatic usage, as in English we may use "son" to a significantly younger man or youth who isn't actually related to us.--Thnidu (talk) 03:22, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Even without the "hon" part, it's still quite likely that he was saying that they should know his sexuality by what they see rather than by what he says. I think he's basically saying that he would prefer to express his sexuality with his actions rather than his words, and that the public is not entitled to an explicit answer on his sexuality.
I would guess is due to the stigma around homosexuality in Mexico, so perhaps he'd prefer if people just took the effort to notice his sexuality by how he looks since it's not as certain as an explicit answer, so that there remains an element of doubt, which would prevent potential stigma. 71.84.230.170 (talk) 18:26, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Though some do think the phrase was actually an affirmation of heterosexuality, like this one:
[1]https://www.infobae.com/america/entretenimiento/2020/06/29/lo-que-se-ve-no-se-pregunta-como-surgio-la-famosa-frase-de-juan-gabriel/
As such, I will mention both views in the article. 71.84.230.170 (talk) 18:39, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Telenovelas[edit]

Some of the song titles I saw in the article were also the names of telenovelas. I'm guessing he also wrote novela theme songs?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.245.245.239 (talkcontribs)

The most succesful and commercial singer-songwriter[edit]

I think it´s clear he´s the most succesful commercial musician in Mexican music history. Even Pedro Infante, Luis Miguel and other idols don´t have the "cross over" popularity of Juan Gabriel.

He´s a commercial singer-songwriter because there are "art" singer-songwriters as Fernando Delgadillo, David Haro, Lila Downs and others.

Fair use rationale for Image:Juangabrielreceivingaward.jpg[edit]

Image:Juangabrielreceivingaward.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Incorrect song titles go here[edit]

Since the article is locked, I suggest some changes, since I speak Spanish I know what the song titles mean, and how wrong some translations are:

  • "He venido a pedirte perdón" ("I Have Come To Ask for Forgiveness") correction: "I Have Come To Ask You Forgiveness"

since pedirte(ask you) is referred to a she in a close personal form, also "Ask for Forgiveness" is "pedir perdón" without a referral subject.

  • "Amor, amor es amor" (Love love is love"), a colon please!!! corrected "Love, love is love", but the first "love" is an addressing to a beloved, the other ones are plain and simple Love(the feeling).
  • "Pero, ¿qué necesidad?" ("What's the Point"), Corrected: "But, What is the need?", since "What's the Point" is referred to a POV, and "que necesidad?" is for what is the need for minor problems in a sentimental situation, when the minor problems are nothing to love. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.247.28.7 (talk) 05:58, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tense[edit]

The article's tense often does not agree. It frequently switches between past and present, but should be written in past. I would fix it... but I'm lazy. The burden now falls on you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.207.156.155 (talk) 23:33, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Claims of Juan Gabriel's death[edit]

There haven been number of edits that mentions he has deceased, but there are no official statements from either his family or record label that has confirmed that he has died. Many sources that are claiming that he has died all cite a single reporter (Joaquín López Dóriga from Televisa). Please do not repost that he has died unless his family or record label has confirmed it. His death has been confirmed by a coroner and the Mexican president. Disregard the previous message. Erick (talk) 21:45, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

the Mexican President tweeted a message of condolences. is that good enough for a confirmation? Oriole7 (talk) 22:07, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Unless the president has specifically mentioned that Juan Gabriel's family, record label, or manager has confirmed his death, no. Erick (talk) 22:09, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sociedad de Autores y Compositores de México has confirmed this which is like the union of mexican composers https://www.facebook.com/SACMoficial/. --Jeff vader (talk) 22:12, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Death[edit]

It has been confirmed by CNN, and by the Mexican president dont know if that counts but here it is CNN Report . --Jeff vader (talk) 22:07, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I already explained above that his death has to be confirmed by either his family or his record label. See WP:BLP. Erick (talk) 22:07, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, just by reliable sources. No policy that states that the family or label has to confirm it. JOJ Hutton 22:16, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies -- I have been undoing the changes. I am a bit confused -- it is okay to add the death now? Oriole7 (talk) 22:23, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Because things like these tend to happen and they usually end up being false. All sources were reporting from a single reporter, but seeing as the LA coroner and family is involved, it seems that it is confirmed. Erick (talk) 22:24, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Juan Gabriel[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Juan Gabriel's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Was the unacknowledged son really illegitimate?[edit]

§ Personal life and death begins "Juan Gabriel was never married." But while I was searching for evidence in the cited source that the mother of his first four children (acknowledged though illegitimate) was named Guadalupe, I watched a couple of the videos included in reference LatinTimes.[1] I'm nowhere near fluent in Spanish, but I figured I'd be able to recognize the name if I heard it, and I didn't, so I tagged the name {{ citation needed }}.

What I did hear was one of the two women in the conversation say, in describing the communications and relations between father and son, "su hijo legítimo" ("his legitimate son"), stressing the adjective emphatically with her voice and a raised index finger.[2]

Can someone fluent in Spanish please check that video?

I have linked to this section from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mexico § Fluent listener needed.

fix the most well known songs sentence[edit]

if you remove the list of songs from this sentence

Among his most recognized penned songs are "Amor eterno", "Querida", "Yo no nací para amar", "Hasta que te conocí", "El Noa Noa", "No tengo dinero", "Abrázame muy fuerte", "Te lo pido por favor", "En esta primavera", "Pero qué necesidad", "Te sigo amando", "Siempre en mi mente", "De mí enamórate", and "Lo pasado, pasado", among others; all of them, performed by him and many other artists.

then you get "among his most recognized penned songs are [list of songs] among others; all of them, performed by him and many other artists." which doesn't make sense and uses the word among twice 2601:647:400:B7A0:0:0:0:171E (talk) 09:07, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
