Discussion

[edit]

I've never done a writer's universe description before, but I feel something should be started.

Other authors have their universes documented as individual articles, but to kick-start things and avoid being slapped down for trivial pages, I've put my start here in the Robson article itself.

This material needs to grow, (not be killed off) until it can stand on its own as an article. Anyone want to help?

PS: I'm working from memory, so I can't site books & page numbers. How heavily anointed should this article be?

Population Groups

[edit]

(this is a scratch pad)

Humans, Cyborgs, Chimeras, 'Forged' biological creations, and AIs co-exist.

Mechanical augmentation is call MekTek, and can go from prosthetics to full cyborg. True MekTek requires artificial neurological connections for command and control.

Baseline Humans are the majority group, and includes those whose genome was spliced and diced from the human gene pool before conception.

Enhanced humans incorporate cross-species biological material, for example gorilla muscle, water gills, or chimera parts like feathers or paws, and almost always have artificial neurological material. Adding MekTek will make an enhanced human, if only by the neurological interface required in the brain.

A Forge is a biological machine which creates biologicals designed for particular form and/or function. The design may be based on an existing species enhanced with speech, intelligence and extra senses, such as a dog that investigates crimes. Or, it may be a new conceptual creation such as an Angel that can travel between earth and space without mechanical assistance, or a hive mind with exceptional computational power.

There were two proto-forges (name? and name?), who built the two existing Forges (name and name -- Metatron?). One is in earth orbit, the other in the Jupiter atmosphere. Intelligences that will inhabit forged bodies are raised by two AIs operating the Uluru virtual reality, where they mature and train before being moved to their forged body. Forged bodies have neurological enhancements, and Forged minds often visit Uluru (somewhat like a religious center) and may retire within.

The Diminished are Forged who did not meet expectations, due to errors in design or construction. A sub-group of Diminished are experiments from human labs or bootleg creations, all of which fail to meet forge criteria. (It is possible humans have successfully 'forged' in labs, but the definition of success means they are mostly undetectable.)
