Jugurtha Tableland

[edit]

Translated notes from French about the mesa.

In 533 the plain served as a refuge against the Vandals, the Byzantines.
In 647 people, defeated by the Arabs, found refuge.
In 686 the Arabs persued the Berber king Koceila up on the tableland.
In 908 troops of Aglabides, defeated on the plain by the Shiites, were unable to take refuge and were cut into pieces. Thereafter it became a refuge for the early Fatimids, then the Zirid.
In 1283 Hafsid Abu Faris was defeated and killed on the plain by a usurper. But his uncle Abu Hafs took refuge on the tableland, replenished his forces, then reconquered Tunis.
In 1352 the Abu Ishaq Hafsid was defeated by rebels.
In 1644 Hamouda Bey defeated Sheikh Hanecha. The tableland was one of Sheikh Hanecha's strongholds.
In 1694 Hussein ibn Ali, who was suspected of treason by Mouradites, took refuge there. Thereafter he became master of Tunisia.
In the 18th century the tableland served as a refuge for the brigand (rebel) Senans, hence the name of the current city.
