Indepth description of the Kalki Purana[edit]

I was the first to share any information about the Kalki Purana. I just recently bought the 86 page bound edition of it from www.indiabookclub.com (if you want it, just click HERE). I'm sorry this page isn't extensive, but hey I don't have access to sanskrit font and I don't read or speak Hindi. Plus, I don't want to break any "copyright" laws by transcribing passages directly from the book. If you really want to know, just buy it. It's only $7.25. Stub[edit]

I self-rated this page as a stub, since a stub is defined as "either a very short article or a rough collection of information that will need much work to bring it to A-Class level." Current Status[edit]

So far only a list of events is given. I will begin to convert it to paragraph form. Here is what was posted so far:

SYNOPSIS

  • Narration of this Purana by the story-teller Sootaji.
  • Origins of the Kali (Demon) and onset of the first stage of Kali Yuga--breakdown of the Indian caste system and condemnation of god-worship;
  • Onset of the second, third and fourth stages of Kali Yuga--men forget the name of God and no longer offer Yagya (sacrifices) to the Devas;
  • Gathering of the Devas before Brahma to complain about hunger from no mortal offerings;
  • Devas' journing to Vaikunta to seek help from Vishnu;

  • Childhood in the mystical kingdom of Shambhala;

  • Long penance to Lord Shiva in the Himalayas;
  • Acceptance of the winged steed (God-Given), the celestial parrot Shuka (शुक), and the divine Ratna maru sword from Lord Shiva;
  • Marriage to Padma, avatar of Vishnu’s heavenly consort Lakshmi;
  • Siring of his sons Jaya and Vijaya; [5]
  • Performance of the Ashwamedha (Horse Sacrifice) to rid the world of all wicked kings and false prophets;
  • Battle and massacre of the sunyavadis at the city of Keekatpur;
  • War with the dark forces of Kali (Demon), including the demon generals Koka and Vikoka;
  • Death of Kali (Demon) at the hands of Dharma and Satya Yuga personified and the death of Koka and Vikoka at the hands of Kalki.
  • Challenge and defeat under Raja Shashidhwaja; [6]
  • Marriage to his second wife Ramaa, daughter of Raja Shashidhwaja;
  • Opening of Satya Yuga (Golden Age);
  • Division of earthly kingdoms amongst his generals;
  • Performance of the Ashwamedha and Rajasooya sacrifices to nourish the Devas;
  • Parents' journey to holy place of Badrikashram and death;
  • Siring of his sons Meghamaal and Balahaka;
  • 1,000 year reign as the King of Shambhala;
  • Appearance of the Devas asking him to return to heaven;
  • Ritual bath in the Ganges River;
  • Appearance of his "four-armed" form and re-ascension to the heavenly plain.

OK, I have finished converting the events listed into an article form, and added a few, very minor details and adjustments from my own knowledge. This needs some work, but overall is in better shape. Does all of this information come from B.K. Chaturvedi's book, which is the only reference mentioned? If so, I encourage you to add some (don't go overboard, like every sentence) inline citations or if not, add in your sources and make sure they are reliable. The Kalki Purana article is a typical place for non-notable devotional perspectives that have no place here to seep through. I hope I'm don't sound too harsh but books containing prophecies can be very controversial so any info has to be verified exhaustively. On another note, I think a lot of this information added is more suited for Kali Yuga. I think it can be summarised here in a Synopsis section. You might want to search through these books scans on google books for info on the Kalki Purana. You can also skim through the sources on my Kali (Demon) article. I found a few books that had info about the purana, but I only used certain info. --Ghostexorcist 18:10, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  1. ^ Pior to Kalki, Sumati gave birth to three older sons: Kavi, Praagya and Sumantra.
  2. ^ The Padma Purana (6.242.8-12) states that Vishnuyasha is actually an incarnation of Svayambhuva Manu, who performed great austerities to have the Lord as his child. He received the benediction that the Lord will appear as his son three times. Thus Svayambhuva Manu appears as Dasaratha (Rama), Vasudeva (Krishna) and finally as Vishnuyasha (Kalki).[1]
  3. ^ Kalki birthday will be on "a bright fortnight of the lunar month of Vaishakha [21 April and ending on 21 May], on the 12th lunar tithi (Dvadasi)".
  4. ^ Parashurama is the 6th and only immortal avatar of Lord Vishnu.

  6. ^ Although it sounds bad for the most powerful avatar of Lord Vishnu to fall under the heavy fists of an earthly king, Raja Shashidhwaja was a great devotee of Vishnu. Lord Vishnu had granted him a boon of defeating him on the battlefield.

Subheadings?[edit]

Much of the information here lists events written about in the Kalki Purana, not info about the book itself. I am renaming these parts as subheadings under a subheading of 'Events Depicted in the Kalki Purana'. Is this a good idea? Feedback appreciated. If this article is going to move above Start-class, it will need much additional information and expansion. For example, as of now, not including the Notes/Refs/ See Also/External Links sections, the article had a grand total of... 1 section. Dating[edit]

Since you have objected only datings I have removed my edits for now about dating. But there was only one source was about "Kalika-purana", others were not. Also what is really wrong with the dating to 9th century to 18th century since they have been recognized by multiple sources? First by the historian himself, then the one who quoted him. Also there was so many sources[2][3][4] that say the concept of Kalki was borrowed by Buddhists and then they implemented it. That's why I removed it at first the whole claim first. Capitals00: Instead these vague allegations of "multiple sources", can you please cite one or two with page numbers that actually support what you believe or trying to add? In this case, where does Lopes or others state Kalki purana was composed by 9th-century? If you find an WP:RS (no frivolous non-RS please) that actually dates Kalki purana to the 9th or 10th or 11th etc century, I would welcome it. Remember, concept of Kalki appears in the Mahabharata much earlier, though it is vague and without much details. It would be inappropriate to confuse the dating/sources of the Kalki concept with the dating/sources of the text Kalki purana. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 17:12, 26 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
