Custom bike advert

[edit]

There's been an ongoing problem with an image of a custom bike, File:ZRX1100 CinKo.jpg added by Washington Charter (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and a group of dynamic IPs 166.137.244.80 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), 166.137.240.61 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), 166.137.244.124 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), and 173.167.207.161 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) located in Pennsylvania/Maryland. This photo, and another more deceptive version of the same bike photoshopped onto copyright-pirated background of Tokyo, are being used for advertising of a some kind of "prototype" custom bike. Washington Charter repeatedly uploaded the copyright-violating photo in that link to Commons until he was finally blocked for copyright violation. The second photo of the same bike, File:ZRX1100 CinKo.jpg violates WP:NOTADVERT, and it is an undesirable addition to any vehicle article for the reasons explained in WP:MC-MOS and WP:CARPIX: "Avoid pictures of heavily customized cars [sic] as they may not be very representative of the vehicles most common appearance, unless the text in context to the picture is dealing with the customization of the vehicle." We have no verifiable facts about this custom bike, and we have good evidence that it's being promoted under false pretenses. For example, the claim that the bike was shown in Tokyo yet the only photo of the bike in Tokyo is a known fake, and the post by an IP in Maryland 166.137.244.124 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) which purports to be pirated photo's copyright owner giving permission for use. The photographer of https://www.flickr.com/photos/5cheherazad3/4380476453/ is actually in Australia, and he has recent blog posts from that region, not Maryland. And if a pro photographer wanted his photo to be licensed CC-by-SA, he'd go to Flickr and change it to CC-by-SA, not all rights reserved. The caption's "A custom ZRX1100 street legal track bike" is gibberish.

Photographs are a weird area of Wikipedia because they necessitate a certain amount of original research: the location and circumstances of the photo are often things we just have to trust the photographer on, so they violate the verifiability policy to a degree. At the very least, we should keep away from anything suspicious, or the work of a known liar, especially when it's a custom bike with no encyclopedic value. We have plenty of photos of near-stock Kawasaki ZRX1100‎‎s, so we don't need this. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 16:27, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
