"Collapse" of libel trial?[edit]

The second lead paragraph refers to "the collapse of the trial". This is misleading: it was not the trial that "collapsed", it was the defence against the alleged libel that was torn to shreds under cross-examination. Barnes, who sued for libel, was vindicated and received an apology and an out-of-court settlement. The same misleading words appear in the main text, leaving the reader in some doubt as to who actually won the case. Also, why is it necessary to refer to the trial twice in the lead?
