National Champions 1950[edit]

Nowhere that I can find does the NCAA recognize Kentucky as the 1950 College Football National Champion. NCAA.com only shows Oklahoma as the National Champions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.205.15.209 (talk) 02:44, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The statement about the 1950 national championship has serious problems. (1)It's not footnoted. (2) I can find no evidence that the NCAA commissioned Jeff Sagarin to do anything. (3) The statement implies that the NCAA recognizes UK as the sole champion from that year, which is definitely not accurate. Jeff Sagarin proclaimed UK "champions" more than 50 years after the fact based solely on computer models. The NCAA recognizes this as one of several "championships" awarded for that year. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.128.224.6 (talk) 13:39, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The statement about the 1950 championship has absolutely no problems. It correctly states that UK was a co-champion for 1950. The citation proving that the NCAA recognizes UK as a champion from that season is used again later in the article: footnote 3 linking to this url http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2011/FBS.pdf On page 70 of that document it states that Sagarin ranked football teams since 1978, and also retroactively ranked all seasons dating back to 1919. Page 73 of that document lists UK as the 1950 co-champions along with Oklahoma, Princeton, and Tennessee. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.143.134.8 (talk) 22:31, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To address the concerns enumerated above, in order: 1) The statement is now footnoted, to an NCAA source. 2) Sagarin certainly applied his rankings to earlier seasons, regardless of what caused him to do so. The statement has been edited to reflect that. 3) Again, the statement is clear that Kentucky are co-champions for 1950, which is supported by the NCAA source cited in the footnote. Hope that clears everything up. 24.255.164.199 (talk) 21:02, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Guys, please stop deleting the national championship without explanation. The NCAA's own web site is the source of this information, it is incredibly clear that the NCAA recognizes Kentucky as one of the national champions for the 1950 season. Find a more authoritative source than the NCAA's own list of former champions that says Kentucky was not a 1950 champion and then you can delete the references to the championship. 68.103.49.112 (talk) 21:15, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, it does not list Kentucky as a national champion in 1950 or any other year. http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/college-football-national-championship-history 208.93.244.60 (talk) 01:01, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Minor Correction Regarding "Mumme Era" Section[edit]

I'm not entirely sure of the proper, relevant convention, but it would seem a bit in the "Hal Mumme Era" section is a bit misleading/incorrectly sourced. Specifically, the clause "Although Mumme himself was not implicated in any violation..." seems a bit inaccurate. To start, the source linked to that (the Sports Illustrated article) doesn't say Mumme wasn't implicated. It says he "...was not given any individual sanctions," however does implicate him in Kentucky's larger issue, as stated immediately before that quote: "Mumme was charged with failure to monitor the program." It might be that the author intended to link to one of the other sources referencing the scandal--the USA Today one. It does mention that Ivy stated to the Board of Directors that "Ivy told the school's board of trustees last month that the investigation had uncovered several violations, some of which would be deemed major by the NCAA. He said at the time there had been no evidence linking Mumme to any of the violations." However, this was an initial statement from the AD to the Board, and not the finding of the NCAA investigation. Finally, it does appear that the NCAA's findings did include Mumme, at least indirectly, mentioning that he had been told numerous times of these likely violations, and never addressed the issues. (See, for example, this WaPo article [1])

Again, I'm not sure what the proper convention or weight is, and if that's not sufficient to consider Mumme "directly implicated" I'd understand, though at the very least I might recommend changing it to "Mumme was never personally sanctioned," or at the very least, citing the USA Today article instead of the SI one. Thanks! 136.167.244.212 (talk) 15:34, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done It looks like a misinterpretation of the existing citation[1] re "Ivy told the school's board of trustees last month that the investigation had uncovered several violations, some of which would be deemed major by the NCAA. He said at the time there had been no evidence linking Mumme to any of the violations." UW Dawgs (talk) 16:10, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wow that was fast, thank you! I figured it was something like that--looks great now!! 136.167.244.126 (talk) 13:47, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
