correct name spelling

[edit]

What is the correct name spelling in Roman letters? 2 sources state: Khalid al-Asaad and Khaled al-Asaad --Jcardazzi (talk) 20:49, 19 August 2015 (UTC)jcardazzi[reply]

The New York Times even corrects itself, stating "that the slain scholar's name is al-Asaad, not Asaad" http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2015/08/19/world/middleeast/ap-ml-islamic-state.html?_r=0. Kdammers (talk) 20:54, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nevertheless, Khaled Asaad was more or less his pen name. See the citations in the Selected publications section. Peaceray (talk) 04:39, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Birth Year

[edit]

If he was 82 when he died he could not have been born in 1934. EternalNomad (talk) 01:45, 20 August 2015 (UTC)EternalNomad[reply]

Currently, our article gives 1934 as his date of birth with a reference to the NYT article, but I can't find any mention of any birth year in that NYT reference. Kdammers (talk) 06:04, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The NYT mentions he recently turned 83 (which suggests 1932) however the year is not specifically mentioned. The BBC on the other hand states he was born in 1934 and was 81 years old. --Droodkin (talk) 16:12, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed in finding these bibliographic citations

[edit]

I found two citations for "Khaled Al- Asaad" in Zenobia, the Queen of Palmyra - Muṣṭafá Ṭalās - Google Books, but I have not been able to find anything else about them online or at Worldcat.org. Perhaps these are in Arabic or French & the citation was translated into English for the sake of the book. Any multi-lingual bibliographic sleuths out there? Worldcat.org citations under خالد الأسعد

[edit]

There appear to be about 17 citations listed in Worldcat.org citations under خالد الأسعد. I cannot read Arabic, so I cannot even determine which of these are by the archaeologist, & I have reason to believe from earlier searches using Khaled al-Asaad or Khaled Asaad that there is also a medical doctor by the same name. Would someone who can read Arabic please check the citations under the following link?

http://www.worldcat.org/search?qt=worldcat_org_all&q=خالد الأسعد

If you find valid citations, would you please add them to the Selected publications section with the {{Cite web}} template & using the |language=Arabic & |trans_title parameters?

Thanks,

Help with the pronunciation

[edit]

Does anyone know how to clarify the pronunciation of this scholar surname ? In its current form its read like we read the last name of Bashar al-Assad. However, this scholar last name is Al-As'ad (with ' to indicate the Arabic letter Ayin). How can we note this in the lead ? Can someone add an IPA ? I dont know how to do it.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 22:13, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reactions

[edit]

Is there any reaction from the Syrian government or President Assad? --Norden1990 (talk) 17:41, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Norden1990: I added the reaction of the Syrian Antiquities Chief, who is a Syrian government official. Don't know about other reactions that may have come out. --Al Ameer (talk) 00:11, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. --Norden1990 (talk) 10:52, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Date of Birth

[edit]

Some sources are saying 1932 and some 1934. Well, none of them is Syrian and Al-Asaad was a Syrian and Syrians know his year of birth. According to Tishreen News paper which is issued by the Syrian Government, Al-Asaad was born 1934. Hope this will end this age disagreement. Tishreen article on Al-Asaad.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 11:37, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

He was Syrian and "Syrians know his year of birth"?!? What kind of logic is this? --ash (talk) 16:44, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ehmm, have you read the rest of my comment before you question the logic? Al-asaad was Syrian, and the Syrian state knows the birth dates of its citizens (you know, since it is the authority that issues ID cards and passports). That date was mentioned in a new paper owned by the state. Is the logic more logical now ?.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 11:28, 2 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
