Move Kharkivskyi entry to Kharkivksyi Raion

[edit]

I think that it would make sense to move (rename) the entry Kharkivskyi to Kharkivskyi Raion because the word Kharkivskyi on its own refers more to the city Kharkiv in Ukraine than to the raion in Kiev. If you support, please vote below. -- mno July 7, 2005 00:50 (UTC)

I edited out your actual vote. Since Kharkivskyi Raion article does not exist, the move does not require an admin action and you can do it as well as anyone. You are right though to propose it first, because there may be other opinions. We need to check whether there is Kharkivskyi Raion around Kharkiv (in UA many oblast centers also serve as a raion seat) and see whether other users would want Kharkivskyi Raion, Kiev, Kharkiv Raion, Kiev, Kharkiv District Kiev, etc. Also, please see talk:Raion recent discussion. Cheers, -Irpen July 7, 2005 00:57 (UTC)
Ah. K, got it. Sorry, kinda new to this whole thing. So should I delete my entries in the move page then also? -- mno July 7, 2005 01:02 (UTC)
I already did that :). Worry not and thanks. We'll see what others will say. Please look around at the portal, its boards, its links, etc. I am glad another UA-active editor joined in. Cheers, --Irpen July 7, 2005 01:26 (UTC)

Is there another Kharkivs'kyi raion anywhere in Ukraine? Michael Z. 2005-07-7 06:45 Z

I haven't researched this yet, but I would think that there probably is another one somewhere, since Kharkiv used to be the capital for a short period of time when a lot of original construction was going on in Ukraine. -- mno July 7, 2005 14:10 (UTC)
OK, did some preliminary research. Looking at the information on the official Kharkiv website (http://www.citynet.kharkov.ua/), it seems that Kharkiv itself doesn't have a Kharkivskyi raion (but this makes sense). However, they refer to Kharkivskyi train link and other tranportational things. -- mno July 7, 2005 17:45 (UTC)
What I said above was my suspicion that Kharkiv Oblast has a Kharkivskiy Rayon. Many UA oblast capitals are also "Raycenters" if I may say so. For example, Kiev-Svyatoshinsiy Raion is not a city district but and Oblast District. There are many other examples, like Zhytomyr Raion in Zhytomyr Oblast (take a look), etc. Anyway, I just checked UA-Wiki and found out that there is a Kharkiv Raion in Kharkiv Oblast. See http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A5%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%BA%D1%96%D0%B2%D1%81%D1%8C%D0%BA%D0%B0_%D0%BE%D0%B1%D0%BB%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D1%8C and http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A5%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%8C%D0%BA%D1%96%D0%B2%D1%81%D1%8C%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BE%D0%BD . So, we should move the article perhaps to Kharkiv Raion, Kiev. Anyone objects? --Irpen July 7, 2005 18:06 (UTC)
Nope, sounds good. This is probably something that we'll run into with almost all large cities in Ukraine and other Eastern European countries. Sounds good to move to Kharkivskyi Raion, Kiev. -- mno July 7, 2005 18:19 (UTC)
Done. Also, Kharkivskyi Raion created as dab page to which Kharkivskyi now redirects. At the dab there is now a red link Kharkivskyi Raion, Kharkiv Oblast. Maybe someone (or myself) will write is some time (There is a stub in UA wiki as a start). Besides, I am not even sure I picked the best name. Maybe Kharkiv Raion would do for the district around Kharkiv]]. Anyway, since there is no article now, the name can be discussed separately. Thanks to all! -Irpen July 7, 2005 18:54 (UTC)
Should we be sticking to the same English-language convention as for oblasts, and make it Kharkiv Raion, Kiev and Kharkiv Raion, Kharkiv Oblast? Of course each article would have the Ukrainian and transliteration, too. Michael Z. 2005-07-7 20:55 Z

I can't really explain it now, but I would say Kharkiv Raion, Kharkiv Oblast but Kharkivskyi Raion, Kiev. How about that? --Irpen July 7, 2005 20:57 (UTC)

Kharkivskyi Massyv

[edit]
  1. (Something negative :) There was never such highway ("road artery" whatever like that) as "Kharkivskyi Massyv", and "Massyv" is no way some sort of higway, but rather "part of the city" (mainly "sleeping area" of the city). This word became popular during "soviet times" as variant of "zhilmassyv" - "zhiloy massyv" ("жилмассив" - "жилой массив" in Russian) - for example "zhilmassyv Teremki".
  2. (Something less negative ;) After last reorganization there is no such administrative region as Kharkivskyi, so it would be better to rename the article to "Kharkivskyi Massyv" (peoplpe always mentioned it as "massyv" explaining where they live)

--pavlosh 8 July 2005 17:49 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for the info. Let's see what others have to say about it. I agree for renaming to "Kharkivskyi Massiv/Massyv" but I think that we should add something in the title to make it clear that it's not a raion (anymore at least). -- mno July 8, 2005 18:08 (UTC)
Then Kharkivskyi neighborhood, Kiev, I would say. "Raion" made sense in English WP because it is a particular administrative unit in ex-USSR and there is a WP article for it. We don't need to bring "massyv" or "massiv" into English WP unless there is a contextual need. In this and similar context just using neighborhood seems to accomplish all we need. That's just my opinion. --Irpen July 8, 2005 18:24 (UTC)
Good idea. I was trying to think of a better word, but neighbourhood completely popped out of my mind. And to think we just moved it :) Where were you earlier, pavlosh? ;) -- mno July 8, 2005 18:29 (UTC)
No big deal, we'll move it again without a hitch :). Just let's wait a little bit to allow other ideas to be posted here. --Irpen July 8, 2005 18:43 (UTC)

Thanks guys, moved now to Kharkivskyi neighborhood, Kiev as you can see. Pavlo, thanks again for your correction. Cheers, --Irpen July 9, 2005 05:35 (UTC)
