Registration[edit]

It should be noted that Khemosabi's markings were so flashy that Ruth Husband considered never registering him. Her husband thought otherwise. Source: The Horse Book of Lists by Cindy Hale. White Arabian mare (talk) 02:11, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Never heard that one before... can you provide a full citation? (see WP:CITE for what is needed). The popularity of white markings ebbed and flowed, in the 1950s they were all the rage... Montanabw(talk) 01:22, 18 August 2015 (UTC) Follow up FWIW, found it in google books. Still kind of wonder if it's trivia, but may be worth noting if we expand the article. Good find! Thanks, I thought that was funny considering what he accomplished. White Arabian mare (talk) 02:13, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

back in the day, weird white markings were grounds for some horses in other breeds being kicked out of their registries altogether, see cropout. There was insufficient genetic knowledge, but knowledge that lethal white syndrome existed (though inaccurate understanding of what caused it). I'm old enough to remember people screaming bloody murder if a judge placed an Arabian with a body spot in a halter class. Montanabw(talk) 22:17, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm not a big fan of Paint, pinto or excessive white because pink skin sunburns so much...I've always wondered if that was the real reason behind the old-timers' dislike of horses with four white feet. White Arabian mare (talk) 16:24, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Noses and eyes and other areas where there is little hair on the skin tend to be the problem areas for sunburn. The white feet thing is different; there is the perception that white hooves are softer and less durable, though attempts to study the matter don't bear this out. I was actually working on this question a bit last year when I did up the California Chrome article, see User:Montanabw/Hooves. In evolutionary terms, white spots just made an animal more vulnerable to predators, hence they got eaten quicker! But white spotting seems to be a trait that characterizes domestication. I'm not certain, but I think the Domesticated silver foxes are even starting to have some individuals pop up with white markings, quite odd and interesting.
