Name[edit]

Khirbet er-Ra'i corresponds to the traditional English spelling. Dropping the consonant from the definite article seems to be practiced only by Israelis unfamiliar with the wider academic English practice. Why is it being used in an article of academic interest? SWP[edit]

This place must be on the SWP amp 20, but I cannot find it under the name of Khirbet er-Ra'i. User:Bolter21 (or anyone else): do you know what name was it called when it was surveyed by the PEF Survey of Palestine in 1875? We should link to that survey, Huldra (talk) 22:31, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can't access written sources right now, but I used Palestine Open Maps and found that the place appears on the PEF map under "Tôr el Hiry". It is located halfway between Iraq al-Manshiyya and al-Qubayba. Sites in the immediate vicinity include "Khŭrbet Furut" and "Kh. Mert es Seil".--Bolter21 (talk to me) 09:24, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, found it. I wonder how did "Tôr el Hiry" become "Khirbet er-Ra'i"? Interestingly, it must have happened before the 1940s, as the maps from the 1940s has "Khirbet er-Ra'i", Huldra (talk) 22:43, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the survey by the PEF in 1875; where is that located? I cannot find anything in SWP, Huldra (talk) 22:54, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, to say that it was "surveyed by the PEF Survey of Palestine in 1875" is a vast overstatement (and where does the year 1875 come from?) The Garfinkel 2021 article only note that it was on the SWP map (Palmer, p. 380). It doesn't look as if SWP thought it was man-made. Huldra (talk) 23:10, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
