Merge (October 2008)

[edit]

Maybe keep conversation here (as there are three pages involved): Talk:New_Zealand_Railways_Corporation#Rationalising New Zealand Railways Corporation, ONTRACK and KiwiRail

Lanma726 (talk) 01:57, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I agree (Ddogg2 (talk) 03:34, 11 October 2008 (UTC))[reply]
I don't think you've really made an argument. They are fundamentally different institutions, each of which has a separate function and identity, and each of which is recognised as being separate and independently important in reliable sources. Bastin 13:23, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
They're legally distinct and perform different functions. Oppose merge. --Lholden (talk) 03:32, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Scope of this article

[edit]

There is a bit much history in the KiwiRail article, some of it could be relocated to Rail transport in New Zealand or the Corporation or ONTRACK articles. I'll do this in a month or so if nobody objects.

ONTRACK merge

[edit]

Looks like ONTRACK is no more. I propose we merge that article with KiwiRail. --LJ Holden 07:27, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

OnTrack (New Zealand) merge

[edit]

I agree with this merge proposal. --Lholden 04:17, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Track crossing restrictions - moved

[edit]

I removed the below text because it is uncited and potentially POV. I can't find any citations for it on the ONTRACK website either.

"Ontrack is attempting to close down the 'informal' level crossings in New Zealand. Many of these crossings have been in place since the construction of the rail network in 1900 and are used on a daily basis by farmers who wish to access their rightfully owned land.
Originally created as statutory crossings as compensation to land owners who had their land acquired under the public works act for the construction of the rail corridor, the status of these crossings "was never documented" and therefore all crossings will be recategorized using the deed system.
Deed terms restrict the crossing of commercial vehicles, provide free access across private land for rail maintenance crews, provision for any and all safety devices (bells, lights, signs etc) to be installed at the grantees expense as well as a yearly fee. Ontrack excludes itself from any liability while leveling all restrictions and costs at the land owner."

Thoughts? --Lholden (talk) 06:28, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I agree lets do it (Ddogg2 (talk) 03:30, 11 October 2008 (UTC))[reply]

I disagree. The NZ Railways Corporation ought to have its own article to contain historical information about NZRC - i.e. the stuff that's ended up on the ONTRACK article. Kiwirail should be a separate article also. --Lholden (talk) 02:05, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree; NZRC, ONTRACK and Kiwirail should all be separate articles.

I also disagree. The topic suits its own article. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 05:02, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article title

[edit]

This article should now be moved to "KiwiRail Network", since (according to the latest RailFan) the company has now been renamed. --Lholden (talk) 06:47, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've edited the article pending the move. No word on when they'll actually change the company's registration. --Lholden (talk) 02:07, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Demise of Tranz Metro

[edit]

I assume once Transdev takes over the Wellington contract, Tranz Metro ceases to exist as a KiwiRail division? Should we create a "Transdev Wellington" page and shift over the info in this article? --LJ Holden 23:24, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is that while Transdev have been selected as the preferred operator, they haven't actually got the contract yet until finer details have been sorted out. So let's wait until then. pcuser42 (talk) 05:50, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The Dom Post reported it was going to be by March, I'd assume that the contractual details are being worked out now --LJ Holden 08:33, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Transdev states on its website the hand-over isn't going to happen until July 2016--LJ Holden 08:34, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Track

[edit]

I was looking for somewhere to record the use of plastic track in 2021 for tunnels, bridges and points. Its use in 2012 has a paragraph, but there seem to be no links to that from NZ rail articles.

Although there's a Category:Rail infrastructure in New Zealand, there's no one article, or section covering permanent way and its development in New Zealand. Should there be and, if so, here, in Rail transport in New Zealand, or where? It could link to Category:Railway bridges in New Zealand, tunnels and what else?

Do any articles cover track weight, profile, or maintenance? Johnragla (talk) 22:40, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've not been able to find any beyond the general descriptive articles. But you've got a verifiable source so nothing stopping you from adding it. --LJ Holden 09:12, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Re-consolidate all the plans

[edit]

So at the current we have about 4 different catergorys for various KIWIRAIL plans, I believe it looks very messy and is lacking a lot of new plans such as the multi billion dollar freight yard in Palmerston North, what are you guys thoughts to reconsolidating all their past, current and future projects into 1-2 categories and making it up to date. Potentially a colour coded table with headings such as "planned" "active" and "completed". We could also potentially make the table have a blue hyper link to a page that goes into the plan in more detail. Kiwi manz (talk) 23:51, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Better check the WP:MOS for how to format it, but if it simplifies the article then go for it. --LJ Holden 03:26, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
