REQUESTED UPDATES TO PAGE FOR MAY 2024

[edit]

1. What I think should be changed:

Please add History section directly after the Lead section:

Here’s the section with proposed text:

History

Knight-Hennessy Scholars was founded in 2016 with a $400 million pledge from Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike and a Stanford alum.[1] Knight’s donation, which was one of the largest ever made to an American university at the time, was combined with $350 million in additional gifts from other Stanford alumni.[2] Named for Knight and John Hennessy, Stanford’s 10th president,[3] the program was founded to prepare graduate students to address global issues like climate change and poverty.[1]

Reason: The page is missing important details about the program’s founding. Adding a History section, which is standard for Wikipedia, provides this information using reporting in prominent secondary sources.

2. What I think should be changed:

Please remove the second sentence of the first paragraph of the Program section:

In addition to their graduate studies, scholars participate in leadership development programs, study trips, and have opportunities for mentorship with thought leaders in business, government, and nonprofit fields.[4]

Reason: The sentence is based on an article that was published at the time of the program’s founding. It describes the “future history” of the program, rather than events that had already happened. Therefore it’s a violation of WP:CRYSTALBALL. It also has a somewhat promotional tone. It’s no longer accurate - properly sourced information about the foundation’s programs will be covered later.

3. What I think should be changed:

Please remove the first paragraph of the Program section and delete the “Program” title as the section will be empty (the content will be merged into one section).

Content to be removed:

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program has a focus on attracting prospective graduate students with a wide range of backgrounds from around the world.[5][6][7]

Reason: Sounds promotional without adding meaningful content. The only fact it adds is that the program accepts international students.

4. What I think should be changed:

Please replace what should now be the second paragraph of the Selection and Benefits section:

From:

Potential applicants are required to apply to the Knight-Hennessy scholars program and, separately, to a Stanford University graduate degree program.[4] Of potential applicants, the scholarship program values leadership, independence of thought, and civic commitment.

To:

Potential applicants are required to apply to the Knight-Hennessy scholars program and, separately, to a Stanford University graduate degree program; [4] those accepted receive three years of funding to study at one of Stanford’s seven schools.[8]

Reason: Added information to the first sentence about the admission process using reporting in a high quality media source. The second sentence is both unsourced and isn’t neutral, so I’ve proposed deleting it.

5. What I think should be changed:

Please rewrite the third and fourth paragraphs of the Selection and Benefits section:

From:

Following the application deadline, 500 applicants are selected to complete video interviews. A group of finalists are asked to participate in in-person interviews. A final 50-75 scholars are then selected.

Since 2018, the program has offered annual financial support comprising full tuition and fees, room and board, related academic expenses, and a stipend for living expenses.[9]

To:

The program provides students with annual financial support to cover tuition, housing, and a stipend for living expenses.[3]

Reason: The third paragraph from the Selection Benefits section is unsourced and I couldn’t find a source to support it. The fourth paragraph purportedly described events in 2018 by citing an article written in 2016. I’ve rewritten it in a way that doesn’t bend the space-time continuum.

6. What I think should be changed:

Please replace the first paragraph of the Denning House section:

From:

Denning House was built on the shore of Lake Lagunita on Stanford’s campus. The building serves as the center for the Knight-Hennessy scholars community.[4] Scholars gather at Denning House for presentations, workshops, and social events. The New York architectural firm Ennead designed the two-story building, which has classrooms, a dining area, meeting and lecture rooms, as well as office space for a fellow-in-residence and for the program's administrative staff.[10] The building was a gift from Steven A. Denning and his wife, Roberta Bowman Denning.[10]

To:

In 2018, Denning House on the Stanford campus became the headquarters of the Knight-Hennessey Scholars.[11]The Denning House was designed and constructed to house the program.[12]

Reason: The majority of the existing section has nothing to do with the Knight-Hennessy program and is therefore a violation of WP:COATRACKING. The proposed sentence describes the relationship between the building and the Knight-Hennessy program based on reporting in a reliable source.

7. What I think should be changed:

Please rewrite the Lead section:

From:

Knight-Hennessy Scholars is a graduate-level scholarship program for study at Stanford University. Established in 2016, the program seeks to prepare students to take leadership roles in finding creative solutions to complex global issues. Scholars receive full funding to pursue any graduate degree at Stanford and have additional opportunities for leadership training, mentorship, and experiential learning across multiple disciplines.

To:

Knight-Hennessy Scholars is a graduate-level scholarship program for study at Stanford University. Established in 2016, the program was founded with the aim of preparing students to address complex global issues. Scholars receive funding support to pursue any graduate degree at Stanford.

Reason: The rewritten Lead reflects information established in the body of the article and removes language that is written like an advertisement, per the warning template on top of the page.

8. What I think should be changed:

Please remove the warning template from the top of the page

Reason: I have requested to remove promotional content and replace it with neutral, encyclopedic language based on reporting in high quality sources. The warning template is no longer warranted and should be removed.
