[edit]The middle name of Robert M Green is MacKay not McCray. Robert MacKay Green I invented the ice cream soda in October 1874 at the semicentennial celebration of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia where he ran the soda concession stand. He ran out of cream (drink was made of cream, syrup, and soda water) and substituted vanilla ice cream which became a great hit. He later founded the Robert M. Green and Sons Soda Fountain Company which was run by the family (son Frank Deleplaine and grandson Frank Delaplaine II) until the 1950s. My husband is Robert MacKay Green VI, the great great grandson of Robert MacKay Green I. We have more information and photographs, if you are interested.
