Gajanuru

[edit]

Gajanuru is in Thalavadi Taluk of Erode District in Tamilnadu — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dineshpkm (talkcontribs) 04:56, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have recently been visiting the Kollegal taluk. My brother in law is a panchayat member of the Martalli panchayat. According to him, the Hannur taluk government is organizing but still not yet functioning. Their taluk government still runs out of Kollegal, as does the zilla panchayat, which I believe is a somewhat separate issue.

Although the BR Hills are often talked about in the same breath as the MM Hills, they are in separate taluks. The BR Hills are iun Yelandur and the MM Hills in Kollagal. Additionally, I believe that the MM Hills Kannada name would be most properly transliterated "Male Mahadeshwara Betta". I believe that "Malai" would be Tamil. Not being a native speaker of Kannada and knowly only bits of Tamil, I left that alone. Anyway, previously Kollegal taluk was in the Madras presidency, changing to Karnataka after Independence. Intermixing Tamil and Kannada words in that area would not be uncommon and so no one from the area may care much anyhow...

I have also added a note to the taluks interesting history of being shifted from the Madras presidency to Karnataka. Several districts were shifted from the Madras presidency to new states. The change of a single taluk certainly does not need mention in the Madras presidency's article, but seems substantial enbough for mentionin the Taluk's own article. This is common knowledge among my family (including the panchayat member, Anthony).

I wonder if there is any reason to change the informatiuon regarding education. After all, being a center for PUC education seems a little underwhelming. Kollegal also has outright colleges, including a teaching college. There certainly is a nursing College at Holy Cross Hospital in Kamigere - I was just there last week. Someone with more information about Kollegal's educational facilities may want to clarify this section.

I've rewritten and wikified the first part of the article. I'll have a go at the second part if nobody else rushes in...

I'm adding the cleanup-date tag. Politepunk 18:44, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commentary on edits 13th March 2006

[edit]

In the absence of anyone else wanting to have a go I'm going to be bold and I'll try to cleanup the second part of the article.

  • I reworded the sentence about Veerappan to further improve style - hopefully ;-)
  • I was bold and removed the sentence about magic in the area; this looks like it quite possibly reflects the effect of external influences on the area, but the original editor didn't provide any verification for this and, as I am unable to verify the assertion, removal seems to be the only option.
  • Being conscious of the probability of removing more content from the original article, I thought I'd better add some 'verifiable material to compensate. Thus I have added an estimate of the population of Kollegal in 2005.
  • I've removed the part about the school run by the Lion's Club; if this article is expanded then I presume that a section detailing institutions in the city/area could be added. I'm sure that the schools do have a good reputation but it is probably unlikely that this is verifiable so I didn't feel like I could leave it in.
  • I've changed the order of some of the content to group the surviving sentences more sensibly.
  • I've condensed the information about the tourist attractions of the area - I hope that I haven't confused any of the names/categories.
  • I've tried to retain the meaning (as I interpreted it) of the section about the use of Kannada and a local dialect of this (which is supported by the the film review cited).
  • I dispensed with the final sentence.

I think that my explanations are now longer than the article ;-) Feel free to add more material, I'llwatch the page and may try to expand it a little.

I hope that the editing has retained the value of the original article and made it a little more accesible. (I just came across the article when hunting typos with google.)

Let me know how you think I did. Politepunk 20:05, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kollegal / Kollegala

[edit]

Google may have "Kollegal" listed, but I am pretty sure that if you hang out at the bus stand, everyone will call the town "Kollegala". Kannadigas are not in the habit of dropping the final 'a' off of the word, even if North Indians and English-speakers might. I am not certain how this should be addressed. I am sure that the en.wikipedia article for Deustchland is listed under Germany. A strict adherence to local conventions which depart from common English parlance can be needlessly confusing. English speakers frequently say simply "Kollegal", and no one will mistake your meaning if you drop the final 'a' sound. However, it should be clear that is not what the locals would say. Do we have any Kannadigas who would like to weigh in? Martalli (talk) 03:46, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would like that change, but even the India.gov.in recognizes it as kollegal. So it might be tough to effect the change. But Bengaluru, the new proposed name comes correctly. So we can't have it our way here. Manohar1010 (talk) 16:40, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
