How much contextualization in the introduction?

[edit]

Since I've been asked to avoid an edit war with log Oz346 and use the talk page, I will do so.

The issue here concerns the contextualization of this event in the introduction section. I am of the opinion that the full context does not need to be included in the introduction. Oz's contention is that the full context needs to be included. But their actions belie this contention for they do not include the killings of service personnel that triggered the 1985 Valvettithurai massacre, a necessary part of the "full context". Furthermore, Oz felt the need to add contextualization of the Anuradhapura massacre as being a revenge attack as well as the cause for another anti-Tamil massacre. Yet strangely enough, they did not feel the need to add similar contextualization for either the preceding incident or the following incident. Thankfully, the asymmetries in contextualization were corrected by yours truly.

As such, by virtue of consistency and concision, I believe that only the immediately preceding incident is necessary in the introduction. This has precedent: for example, the Kristallnacht introduction mentions the assassination of Ernst vom Rath by Herschel Grysnzpan but not the persecution of Jews that drove Grysnzpan to assassinate the diplomat. And in this page, I see a possible compromise. If Oz wants to add a Background section to this page and explain the actual full context (as opposed to the partial 'full' context that they suggest), that would be fine.

Finally, as I wrote this, I noticed that I was referring to Oz as 'he'. Though I corrected every instance of calling Oz 'he' that I could find, I may not have caught them all. If Oz does not identify as 'he', I sincerely apologize. SinhalaLion (talk) 03:06, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SinhalaLion:: Hi your welcome to include the LTTE attack on army soldiers as the trigger for the VVT massacre in those relevant pages, and in a subsequent line on this page. e.g. 'The valvettithiurai massacre itself was sparked off by an earlier LTTE attack killing X soldiers.' I am more than happy for the complete picture to be given. This should end the chain.Oz346 (talk) 03:23, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Though I am now nearly four years late, I am much more literate on Wikipedia's policies and I believe that adding a reference to the VVT massacre in the lead is not in accordance with MOS:LEAD (I was not aware of this before). The policy states that "the emphasis given to material in the lead should roughly reflect its importance to the topic, according to reliable, published sources." The VVT massacre is more directly relevant to the Anuradhapura massacre page than this one, and hence I have removed it from the lead. SinhalaLion (talk) 17:19, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
