Meaning of name

[edit]

What does this word mean? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.201.253.22 (talkcontribs)

"Kykuit" means "lookout" in old Dutch language. Flibirigit 21:24, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In dutch to this day you can say; kijk uit and that translates to englisch as; look out. So the only difference is that the y is changed for ij and the words are apart.

I think over time the people in Amerika didn't understand what it meant and probably attached the words to each other and made kyk uit into kykuit.

Location

[edit]

"Located in…" Tarrytown or Mt. Pleasant, New York? (see: Registered Historic Places) -- Dogears (talk) 01:35, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Overlooks the Catskills?

[edit]

Oh please. They're way too far away. The mountains visible from Kykuit are Harriman State Park and the Hudson Highlands. Daniel Case 03:36, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I finally took that statement out, but I'm still a little doubtful that you can see all the way to the NY skyline from the estate. It would have to be a really clear day, and the GW Bridge is, after all, in the way. Daniel Case 15:32, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to The New York Times ( http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/02/23/travel/escapes/23rock.html ) and Town & Country Magazine (1993) the name is pronounced KYE-kut or KIGH-kut not cake-eight. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.135.161.57 (talk) 16:39, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
