Causes for the transition to settlement culture

For Küster is the christianization an important factor for the transition to settlement culture. He summarizes his arguments as follows (p. 172-73):

Wirtschaftliche, staatliche und kirchliche Kräfte zielten allesamt darauf ab, Mitteleuropa zu einem Land ortsfester Siedlungen zu machen, denn nur ortsfeste Besiedlung war in einem Staats- und Wirtschaftssystem kalkulierbar. Andere Beweggründe hatten die christlichen Missionare. Die Kirchengebäude in den Dörfern waren Heiligen geweiht, daher durften sie nicht wieder aufgegeben werden.
