Title

[edit]

I propose moving the page to "Lakshmi Narayan" from the present "Lakshminarayan". Does anyone have any issues with this? Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 15:58, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support move. I would not even make it into an issue - just move. Wikidas© 17:47, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lakshmi NarayanLakshmi Narayana – WP:COMMONNAME. Chronikhiles (talk) 12:57, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chronikhiles Though it's fine with me but what's wrong with the present name of this page? That additional 'a' is usually not used while pronouncing Lakshmi Narayan. Kridha (talk) 11:05, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kridha It is throughout South India, where Lakshmi-Narayana is highly venerated by the Sri Vaishnava community. I think inclusion of an alphabet makes more sense than its exclusion. Chronikhiles (talk) 11:54, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chronikhiles ok, it's a regional variation then. Usually in Northern and Western India last 'a' is never used. Eg - Ram, Narayan, Ravan, Kans etc. Kridha (talk) 13:48, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kridha It's a linguistic phenomenon called schwa-deletion that happened in Indo-Aryan languages like Hindi and Bengali, where the "a" sound was dropped. Dravidian languages, like Malayalam and Kannada, on the other hand, maintain the original Sanskrit sounds, and so they pronounce it like Rama, Narayana, Ravana, and Kamsa. Neither of them is "wrong", but Wikipedia seems to favour the original Sanskrit in article names. Chronikhiles (talk) 14:13, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chronikhiles Thanks for this information. Kridha (talk) 14:28, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kridha You're very welcome! :) Chronikhiles (talk) 14:50, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
