Merge

[edit]

I am proposing that the articles on North Lambeth and South Lambeth should be merged with this one due to the high degree of duplication, and the need for a single discussion on the various definitions of their boundaries.

Merging North/South Lambeth

[edit]

These are very much two different communities but with no real defined boundaries; for me South Lambeth is the area between Vauxhall and Stockwell and North Lambeth between Waterloo and Elephant. Whilst I see the point for merging, if merged into a single 'Lambeth', the South Lambeth tag would be somewhat geographically incorrect as both north and south lambeth are in the north of the borough. I have lived in the borough for 20 odd years and no one really refers to 'lambeth' as anything other than the borough rather than any particular place; where as south lambeth is pretty distinct, and north lambeth, while less so has the geographically helpful tube station. Hope I havent put cat amongst pigeons in first discussion :) Rob Streatham 02:19, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This merger seems to have been decided in favor of keeping the two pages seperate, so I am going to go ahead and remove the merge tags. -Warhorus 20:24, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Lambeth Council website "North Lambeth comprises the areas of Waterloo, the Southbank, Vauxhall, Kennington and Oval." The area between Vauxhall and Stockwell is usually either called Little Portugal, Nine Elms, Stockwell, Vauxhall or Oval depending on exactly which bit you mean, but it does say South Lambeth on some maps.Anonymous watcher (talk) 16:22, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

South Lambeth

[edit]

I agree most people who live in North or South Lambeth would not refer to the areas as such but to Kennington/Vauxhall/Oval/Waterloo whatever. But I do think South Lambeth is a distinct area centred around South Lambeth Road. As a resident of the area I get lots of post especially from banks and other financial institutions addressed to me at South Lambeth so I do think it is distinct. I think we should therefore keep South and North Lambeth separate rather than merging them into Lambeth

Do not merge

[edit]

South Lambeth should not be merged into Lambeth. South Lambeth is a defined community neighbourhood, with its own personality. It is distinct Stockwell in that it sits further north, it is not Vauxhall as it is definitely not part of the Vauxhall intersection which defines that area, and it is not Oval as that is also a specific and well-defined area. You could say that South Lambeth is an area centred on the community of shops on the South Lambeth Road (predominantly Portuguese), the South Lambeth library and the Mawbey Brough Housing estate. As such it is well defined geographically and in terms of its residents. To merge it into Lambeth which is just an administrative local authority borough of South London and so big that it does not have a community personality would mean that it would lose its specific identity.

A modest proposal

[edit]

I think there is a consensus that South Lambeth stays, although it requires a rewrite.

If North Lambeth is to stay, should it become

(i) a disambiguation page only? This would direct people to separate articles that currently duplicate informaton: - Lambeth - history of the settlement by the riverside and the wider parish; - South Bank; - Waterloo; - London Borough of Lambeth - to be updated to include links to each of the areas covered by each of the "Town Centres"/"Area Committtes", including their definition of North Lambeth ; - Lambeth North tube station;

or

(ii) should the article be renamed Waterloo, London given that this is the most commonly used term for this area of London and given a rewrite?

North Lambeth

[edit]

I think North Lambeth should become a Disambiguation page listing Waterloo, Vauxhall, Kennington etc etc and also the North Lambeth Town Centre which is how the borough of Lambeth defines the area.

I think also that there should be a separate Lambeth page and a Lambeth Borough page

"Notable individuals associated with Lambeth"

[edit]

I recently added David Bowie, John Major, Ted Rogers and Roger Moore to the "Notable individuals associated with Lambeth" section, all of whom were born and/or grew up in Lambeth, and they were removed almost immediately. And I'm very very curious to know why! God forbid it was out of snobbery - are only poets and composers allowed?! That said, you have allowed someone to add the lead vocalist of Fields of the Nephilim and I accept that the little known singer David Bowie could never even dream of being as famous as him! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.47.32.88 (talk) 13:44, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since you don't read the individual edit summaries:
  1. David Bowie, born in Brixton
  2. John Major, born in Carshalton and brought up in Brixton
  3. Ted Rogers, born in Kennington and
  4. Roger Moore, born in Stockwell
I also asked you not to conflate this location with the London Borough of Lambeth.

Ok, Mr. Sarky - since YOU didn't check your facts...

Brixton is in Lambeth! And so is Kennington! And so is Stockwell, although that's irrelevant, as Roger Moore was actually born in Kennington! Incidentally, as you know, because presumably you bothered to read my original entry properly, I didn't claim John Major was born in Lambeth - I said he grew up there!

Idiot. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.47.32.88 (talkcontribs)

Do have a look at the definition of Lambeth used in this article, and have a look at the London Borough of Lambeth. Please also try to restrain your enthusiasm for offending other editors. Kbthompson (talk) 17:55, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think the article is about the place rather than the borough.

Boundaries

[edit]

Would it be too neat to say that Lambeth coincided with Bishop's ward which is described at http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/NR/exeres/241D9235-B094-416A-A141-5EA2709644EF.htm? Are there any parts of Lambeth in Southwark-borough? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.189.103.145 (talk) 09:25, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Literary Lambeth

[edit]

...what about Liza of Lambeth? It's supposed to give a very naturalistic description of life in the working class district at around 1890. --87.157.95.135 (talk) 11:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is now mentioned in the article, with a reference. LordHarris 23:00, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Undiscussed Move

[edit]

I have requested technical assistance to revert this messy undiscussed move. This page is clearly the primary topic for Lambeth. It does not need and should not have UK or England in the title. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 19:56, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
