He was North Mecklenberg's second NFL alumni and was a two-way player for the school, being a linebacker on defense while a guard. -> adding "while on offense" would make this sentence make sense a bit more.

he worked as a pit crew member for racers. can you clarify what type of "racers"? NASCAR? Semi-pro?
