Башни

[edit]

Most probably, Lasker just has adapted old Russian game of Bashni(Towers, Башни) also known as Stolbovye shashki (Столбовые шашки. lit."draughts with pillars". The Russian game is played as a variant of Russian checkers(8x8 board, men capture backwards, kings are long-range) and in a book printed in 1875 it was already mentioned as an old and well-known game (see Башни или туры//Сборник игр для семьи и школы. Ред.Вал.Висковатов. Издание А.Черкесов и Ко, 1875 г. С.Петербург.) Pre-existence of the game in Russia could also be palpable in a tradition to represent a king piece in regular checkers as a man turned up side down and not by covering it with another piece. -- unsigned by User:AgnosticMantis at 11:26, 24 November 2007

I agree. Before reading the previous note, I had already added a sentence about the connection with Bashni. Also, added a reference to an article in German which seems to have the best up-to-date scholarship on Laska. I hope this is appropriate for en:

I tried to put the captions into better english. While doing that I noticed that the caption for image 6 was unappropriate. Tried to fix that also – I hope I understood the rules correctly. If I'm right, Pic 6 should be fixed to show the additional green piece on top. --BjKa (talk) 14:14, 10 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, I got it wrong. Fixed the captions so other people don't fall into the same misunderstanding. In general the pictures are really helpful, but in detail they are very badly done... --BjKa (talk) 14:46, 10 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi BjKa, are my new ones better? cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 12:41, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
