Birthdate, homonyms, family

[edit]
Summary: story seems genuine. The testimonial video lady looks very similar to well known Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum whom photos and videos are available on google search, names match the family, ID cards were shared in Daily Mail exclusive/Breaking articles.

Three of the 14 daughters are named Latifa. I collected information as consistently as I could, but I may have mixed up information. The Wikipedia articles are inconsistent themselves. This video provide primary source information. Then other sources must match the basics. There are two main storylines there : 1) the princess maried to Rashed and with 4 kids, 2) the princess trying to escape and disapeared. These 2 story lines may be 2 different Latifa. Yug (talk) 17:21, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The disappeared one, in this video :

  • 0'00"-?'??": she introduces herself, 5 Dec 1985, one of the 3 Latifa daughters.
  • 24'58"-25'26": "I look like my sister Maitha, I look like my brother Majid and they are both famous. [...] I also gave away copies of my passport, of my certificates and all these stuffs."
  • [1]: "And [Shamsa?] was fighting", about an older sister. Seems to match Shamsa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum.

Yug (talk) 18:40, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum#Children, there are the children of a "Unknown Moroccan woman", which match the names in the video :

Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum 5 March 1980
Shamsa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum[119] 15 August 1981
Latifa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum 16 June 1983
Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum 16 October 1987
Mansour bin Mohammed Al Maktoum[120] 26 June 1989
Holy shit!!! The video is clearly genuine: she looks almost identical to well documented Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whom photos and videos are available on google search. I was wrong on the mother, mariage and children tho, from another of the Maktoum's Latifa. The article is must split. Yug (talk) 19:22, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Split done :
This story seems genuine it's shocking. Yug (talk) 19:49, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
https://www.escapefromdubai.org/proof/princess-latifa-id-documents/ gives a good look of her documents. Many diving related certificates along with certificates on her education. Ohsin (talk) 04:19, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

#FindLatifa

[edit]
  • #FindLatifa
  • The Guardian "Sheikh's daughter escaped family's UK home before 'kidnap'".[1]
  • The Times : Video riddle of Dubai princess ‘kidnapped by her father’.[2]
Persistent Social media campaign by Detained in Dubai, involvement of KimDotCom who also gave #HelpLatifa hashtag seems to be the key drivers in raising awareness about her story before mainstream media reported anything substantial. A new section on aftermath, media reaction, lack of official response from UAE/India and role of influential persons might be needed. Ohsin 21:35, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Location of Building "Kheima"

[edit]

In the video at 04:47 mark, Shaikha Latifa names the location of her and her sister Shamsa's place of imprisonment as "Kheima" in or near Zabeel palace. It is a proper building not a tent as the name in Arabic might imply. There appears to be two locations named Zabeel 1 and Zabeel 2 which one of these is Shaikha Hind's property? Ohsin (talk) 23:42, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Arrests in connection to event

[edit]

Press Release from DetainedinDubai suggests an arrest was made in Oman. If corroborated by other cite-able sources this could be added in separate section. There are mutual friends of group talking about number of people being taken up by authorities in UAE. Ohsin (talk) 01:25, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Article is missing details on Philipines nationals aboard the Yacht as well but probably wait for news outlets to pick it up. Ohsin (talk) 04:19, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Few confirmed details via French authorities. Apparently his arrest was confirmed to his family on March 7 by an official of the French Embassy in Muscat.

@MPS1992 Can I ask how a report in one of most prominent publications a poor reference? And please explain your reasoning to keep removing verifiable content? Like here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Latifa_bint_Mohammed_Al_Maktoum_%28II%29&type=revision&diff=837301426&oldid=837298180

What is date of recording of video?

[edit]

I can not find relevant date and time when the video of Shaikha Latifa was recorded. Location would help too if there is any information. Thanks Ohsin (talk) 06:57, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Details on "Nostromo" appearance at Port Fujairah

[edit]

How should this data on reappearance of Yacht "Nostromo" collected by Peter J Fry be incorporated in wiki? Ohsin (talk) 10:28, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Peter J Fry" is a twitter account with unverifiable owner and not a verified journalist so he is not "a trustable source" per wikipedia's policies. His data should be picked up by journalists, checked up for veracity, published in trustable journal. Then we can pick it up into Wikipedia. Yug (talk) 10:49, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Or we could bypass him, if we get a [public] webpage documenting the logs of the boat. Then that marine website is our trustable source. Yug (talk) 10:58, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Need an Image of her.

[edit]

Article would gain immensely from a photograph of Shaikha Latifa as there are other Latifas. Better if it is from before the video was recorded, perhaps her friends could add one, like this one shared by Stefania Martinengo (extreme left) with Shaikha Latifa (second from left) and Tiina(Third from left). As soon as this article was out I archived it and this image, turns out they later degraded image quality. Ohsin (talk) 20:30, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There was an image earlier, from the video, but someone deleted it.

I uploaded the image currently on the Wiki page as it was posted under a CC-BY-SA license. I might have made a mistake when posting the photo however, as I described it as a "passport photo". I was merely trying to describe the type of photo, as it was intended to be used for a visa/passport/asylum application. It didn't actually come from a passport, according to the owner/creator (Latifa's friend). I fear that my original, quick description may have gotten it flagged for deletion as if it's from a government document, and all of the specific restrictions that can come along with such a source. --Ooopjfooo (talk) 23:37, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Separate section to elaborate contents of video

[edit]

A separate section is needed for elaboration on claims within video. Ohsin (talk) 06:44, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would recommend to have some more coverages from top level papers first. Such as El Pais, The Times, The Guardian and co. Yug (talk) 18:03, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sheikha Shamsa (Elder sister of Sheikha Latifa)

News clips of The Guardian print via newspapers.com

And relevant queries in parliament

Ohsin 18:44, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Moroccan wife mentioned in Video statement is probably Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Moroccan wife named Sheikha Bouchra (or Boushra) who was very active in Europe before 2000 and was apparently a painter as well.

Details on 'Nostromo' interception

[edit]

Two press releases with details on 'Nostromo' interception quoting Tiina and audio/video statement of Herve.

Statements of Tiina have been independently verified through her family by Helsinki Times and Ilta sanomat

TheTimes on India's involvement in raiding the vessel 'Nostromo'

Details on Indian Coast Gurad vessels involved ICGS Shoor, ICGS Samarth and "SAR CG 782" Dornier 228 aircraft.

Ohsin (talk) 09:16, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Baynunah-class_corvette of UAE was also involved

Few details on the escape, boarding 'Nostromo' at Oman via JetSki, detention of Herve and Tiina at 'Al Razeen' prison. Sheikha was taken separately possibly via India.

Associted Press report, Mid-day article and Helsingin Sanomat interview clearly mentions two emirati ships, three ICG ships were involved also two planes and one helicopter were said to be involved. Ohsin (talk) 07:52, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There is no point in listing all the brothers and sisters here. There are about a dozen of them! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.178.163.208 (talk) 07:05, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Her full siblings are only three and only those were listed as they are crucial anchors to establish her identity according to her own video statement. These need to be kept as well as identity of her half-sisters to establish who is who given they share name. Ohsin (talk) 07:12, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Ohsin. Yug (talk) 12:54, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I need to provide the first source (of several) where a citation is needed in the first paragraph and where the article references the video.

Mother's last name

[edit]

@Explorium The ElPais article[3] puts it as 'Alimarah' but there is disagreement on whether it is wrongly interpreted from video statement. Princess Latifa at some other points in video, names her adopted sisters and they seem to share the last name with mother. Here is time-tagged list to help with what is said meanwhile use cited as well as interpreted last name or avoid entirely?

Ohsin (talk) 21:34, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Her adopted sisters aren't her mother's children. Her mother is حورية أحمد المعاش... Algeria Post (an Arabic reliable source) spelled it out correctly حورية احمد لمعاش (Lem3aash) as Algerians (and Latifa) pronounce it in the Algerian dialect... It's hard for non native-Arabic speakers to tell the difference amongst the various dialects... المعاش vs لمعاش

Hope this helps...
Explorium (talk) 04:01, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the correct spelling of the mother's name is 'Houria Ahmed Lamara' as was edited by @Editoija123 here (later reverted): [2] and as it appears is this Algerian article[4]. The same spelling is used here: [3] on the website campaigning for her release. Ooopjfooo (talk) 23:03, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On Daily Mail and youtube statement as source

[edit]

DM has well known issues with reliability and fact checking. There are plenty of alternate sources, for quoted material from legal representatives and their own press releases. But DM references need to kept in parallel though as it was first news outlet to break the news and echoes press releases by legal firm. Source of Youtube video statement the identity of person(Princess Latifa) in it has been confirmed by multiple reports[5][6][7] but citing it as 'facts' of is not correct 'claimed', 'accused' is appropriate way to put it. Also @MPS1992 instead of ham-handed removal of references and content try and find parallel references (there are plenty in this page alone) and use talk page for dicussion.

Ohsin (talk) 21:34, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DM references need to kept in parallel -- Please could you explain the Wikipedia policy which requires this. MPS1992 (talk) 22:45, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Quoting me in full would be better. It is a suggestion to editors. That report incidentally has good resolution images of documents. Such image data or quoted content can help editors who are willing to expand article in finding alternate articles. DM also was first outlet -however unreliable it may be- to break the story and has significance in timeline of events. DM is not blacklisted. Ohsin (talk) 00:01, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is this some sort of joke? I don't need to quote you in full, your comment is right there, immediately before my reply! I have seen your suggestion, and I do not agree with it. MPS1992 (talk) 01:18, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Quoting without context is misrepresenting what is being said. If there is extra and very relevant references from source that is not blacklisted, it should be kept as a guiding source for example you could have used the quote in it to seek better references but instead chose to remove quote AND source. Disagreement is fine, censorship and controlling critical information isn't. If something serves in overall improvement of article it needs to be kept, rather than crudely removed. You even removed references from Wort.lu which is a very respected source randomly citing WP:BLP, while the reason for including it was to suggest scale of incident, people involved, and harassment of anyone in connection to the event. Ohsin (talk) 02:15, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Since you both are well meaning and need help with consensus, I agree with Ohsin. The Daily Mail broke the story in MSM, in the midst of a global media blackout, but the tragedies of Shamsa and Latifa are known to many in Dubai. Latifa´s attorneys are a reliable, non-MSM source. They describe in more detail what transpired and the false kidnapping and rescue narrative pushed by the UAE.

Explorium (talk) 04:21, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In midst of claims and counter claims, third party references and publication through reputed outlets is needed blog posts are opinion pieces but official press releases at least give one side of events which in this case is largely only side but with independent verification of identity of girl and MarineTraffic verifying Nostromo location detail at Fujairah, there is pretty good foundation already. I wanted to include name of Christian Elombo because he is being harassed and there are already social media campaigns and petitions for his release, making him notable as a one of the victims. Also need suggestion on how to describe contents of her verified video statement, source of which is now known without actually violating WP:BLP Ohsin (talk) 04:44, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is a made-up reason to use DM as a source. I just removed again, under WP:BLP, a paragraph cited solely to the DM.

  • If this is noteworthy, it'll be in other sources.
  • If the DM breaking the story is noteworthy, that will have been noted in other sources.
  • If the details that are noteworthy under WP:BLP are worth noting in the BLP at all, they'll be in those other sources.

There is no actual reason to link the deprecated source content itself, and plenty of reason not to - David Gerard (talk) 00:17, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@David Gerard: Here are other references on DM breaking the news on 9 March.
Highlighting when the news broke is significant in context of a) Latifa posting about her leaving Dubai in 26 Feb 2018 itself to gain media attention which didn't happen, her account was disabled after she was apprehended, b) Her full video-statement was released on 11 March after DailyMail broke news on 9 March 2018.

 Ohsin  03:41, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As I suggested, link the RSes detailing the DM's involvement - there is still no overriding need to link the DM, and having a whole para in a BLP sourced solely to the DM is extremely unlikely to be acceptable.
(Also, Newsweek post-2013 is not a good RS - see [{WP:RSP]]) - David Gerard (talk) 08:41, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sheikha Latifa's picture

[edit]

Since her Facebook and Instagram were taken down, I could not find a better picture of Sheikha Latifa. I recommend adding this picture, for the lack of better alternative, verified by her attorney Radha Stirling of Detained in Dubai, and by many reliable sources... unless someone else has a better picture of her from a different reliable source willing to share it. Thanks to all those who can help.

https://timedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/sheikha-latifa.jpg

Explorium (talk) 05:49, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Explorium: thank you for your recommendation and for confirming the verification by her attorney. MPS1992 (talk) 00:22, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My pleasure. BTW. mynewsdesk.com is a reliable source. It's Detained in Dubai's official page. Explorium (talk) 04:07, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
MPS1992: I recommend that you discuss the raid (it was a raid) with Ohsin before you revert his edits. He has invested the most in shaping the article to Wikipedia Standards. Thanks... Explorium (talk) 04:17, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:OWN. MPS1992 (talk) 08:05, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's an advocacy organization, its website is reliable for the organization's own views, statements and opinions. In this case, specifically marked as a press release. MPS1992 (talk) 08:04, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I respectfully disagree. Radha Stirling, Latifa's attorney has established credibility. Many reliable sources are questioning Dubai's narrative of kidnapping and their unwarranted INTERPOL red alert. I side with the many reliable sources and give credence to Detained in Dubai over the false narrative of Dubai's authorities (a traditional reliable source turned rogue in this matter). Dubai said Latifa is back in Dubai, happy and safe yet she's not allowed to go to London and meet with her attorneys. That just doesn't add up. Explorium (talk) 19:44, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS does not make Interpol illegitimate, et cetera. You see the authorities' account as false, others take the opposite view. Does it add up? Often, no. MPS1992 (talk) 23:46, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That is poor screenshot for identification purpose especially when he identity is being confused with her half-sister, rather have a screenshot facing straight and possibly with a neutral or near neutral expression and less animated the better. Ohsin 11:52, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't referring to my poor quality picture. I was referring to the picture you placed from the Detained in Dubai video. Detained in Dubai have not made a claim to take it down. If we need consensus, I vote for re-placing it as the readers need to be able to easily identify her from her 2 other sisters. Explorium (talk) 19:47, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Explorium: Sorry I wasn't referring to different discussion on different page, just suggesting what kind of screen is appropriate. Anyways that firm would need to upload a fair use version on their website. The screenshot uploaded by me was removed after two days under NFC#C1. Ohsin 23:17, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, if the firm uploaded a fair use version of an image on their website, that could expressly not be used on Wikipedia. MPS1992 (talk) 23:46, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well it at least clears copyright claim that arises when one is referring to a video hosted on a channel and website that doesn't explicitly say who they are managed by, status of missing person and grave danger to life was already covered in some sources may be rationale can handle that. But yeah best would be if screenshots are released by firm under CC-BY-SA and if someone can communicate it to them it would be great. Ohsin 12:35, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Allegations of direct involvement of Prime Minister of India and UAE

[edit]

Questionable content of the Wikipedia article

[edit]

It is important to note that all sources in this article are purely based on 2018 reports of questionable source. The original video of her originated on a youtube channel [8] that has a history of posting fake information. Indeed the second video posted on the channel [9] is a cut down version of a BBC interview of Sheikh Mohammed by BBC [10] that has been cut in a way that it distorts meaning - ripping sentences apart and thereby completely altering meaning. As briefly noted at the end of the BBC video on the alleged Dubai princess [11] all the people involved - the French "spy" and the company "Detained in Dubai"- have previously been noted as criminals by the UAE government and therefore they declined to comment on the story. The story of an adult male supposedly dressed up in an Abaya to flee a developed country by diving is questionable.

Please sign your name when you publish an opinion unsupported by facts. The article is not 'purely based on 2018 reports of questionable source'. It is consistent with the statement by Human Rights Watch [[4]] and several verifiable reliable media sources quoted in the article by several independent editors, and that you chose to ignore. Explorium (talk) 22:55, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry to say that your source Human Rights Watch, while otherwise reputable relies on unreliable sources itself (other media the several independent editors you mention rely on the same source or derivatives of it). Indeed this article and many others quote the same youtube channel as primary original source that as I should have established very clearly is not trustworthy. Check for yourself that the video I linked to that was posted on this channel was constructed in a way that was meant to distort truths that were mentioned in the BBC video it was cut from. Why would you believe someone you can see clearly distorts facts beyond recognition in one place blindly when it comes to something else? I am severely disturbed that quoting articles without checking the sources of origin for validity is common practice. Also I am especially disturbed that Human Rights Watch would publish without proper fact checking but sadly this seems to be case. This seems to be sensationalism or envy when it comes to the middle east? Furthermore I do not have a name to sign with since I do not have a Wikipedia account. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:6000:E914:6C00:11AF:F579:8A05:637A (talk) 07:49, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously to avoid costly duplication of work while the subject is still hot. Yug (talk) 10:12, 11 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It does seem odd. I can understand that we should avoid duplicating content, but presumably the first place to insert reliably sourced neutral content about Latifa, is in the article about Latifa, not in the article about Mohammed? Also I don't think anyone should be describing Latifa as "hot", even on an article talk page, unless it is mentioning an independent reliable source having described her in that way. Err... "while the subject is still hot" means "while the topic is still in the news" :) "Hot, informal": "(of news) fresh and of great interest." --kingboyk (talk) 19:09, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted edits

[edit]

@Ohsin: Read the Summary here, in which it is mentioned that the picture was taken in 2018 by Tiina Jauhiainen. Regarding the mother's last name, you have deleted two references by claiming circular reporting! There is no family in whole Algeria which is called "Lamara" ! In this video here, she mentions her mother's name, but I am sure that you did not even bother to check the sites before reverting the edits! BestChance1 (talk) 15:02, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@BestChance1: Apologies, I missed the photograph description. Given she disappeared in March 2018 itself, captioning the photograph with 2018 year is still slightly vague. I suggest we either add 'January' to it or simply say that this image is taken before March 2018 incident. We have conflicting references citing mother's name, the two references you have removed were seemingly from Algerian outlets if we go by name of domains and dated 10 March 2018 before this wiki article was written so safe from 'Citogenesis', here is another reference using "Laâmara" in her name and dated 10 March 2018. I am not sure if these references meet WP:RS but lybio.net appears to be a WP:USERGENERATED content host, its transcription of video has many mistakes and that site most certainly doesn't meet reliability guidelines. I have watched that video few times and you can find my transcription of it above in this talk page. In it I mark out inaudible/uncertain parts. For what it is worth those campaigning for release of Latifa are using 'Lamara' and appear to have genuine information along images of mother. The original reference that got the confusion started is this (dated 10 March 2018) and uses "Lamaache" which somehow evolved into "Al m'aash" overtime. On a lighter note I found at least one Algerian footballer with relatable name but that doesn't help us here. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nabil_Lamara  Ohsin  19:29, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Shamsa

[edit]

@Yug:, @Ohsin:: FYI, I have created her sister Shamsa Al Maktoum [fr]’s article in French.

@JohnNewton8: Thank you for doing this John. I'll put up an English version as soon as time allows. Cheers  Ohsin  18:00, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@JohnNewton8: Shamsa Al Maktoum A stub is up.  Ohsin  07:17, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

UK Government

[edit]

This is confusing. I understand that people want the UK government to intervene, but it's silly; the UAE is no longer a British colony. Besides, there's a lot of injustice in Britain and other parts of the world. It is not going to intervene.103.246.39.1 (talk) 08:29, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Intervene in what way? She's safe and well? Martinevans123 (talk) 09:01, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm saying that the activists want the UK government to intervene. That's what I read in one of the sources.103.246.39.1 (talk) 06:25, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
