There are better lyrics to quote from Todd Rundgren's 'Baby's Let's Swing':

NPOV?

I'm as big a Laura Nyro fan as anyone but this article seems to violate the NPOV rules with phrases like "She possessed a beautiful, angelic voice" and "Nyro was also blessed" both of which are not only not neutral but presuppose the existence of a deity and angels. If there is no reasonable objection, I'd like to replace these and others similar remarks with something a bit more in keeping with NPOV. SuperDuperMan 00:06, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Her name is pronounced: NEAR-oh. As in the guy who fiddled while Rome burned.

List of hits

They should add a list of her hit songs performed by other artists. I don't think she had any real hits on her own as a performer. Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues (5th Dimension); Stoney End, Flim Flam Man (Barbra Streisand); Eli's Coming (Three Dog Night). Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I'd do it myself, but don't really know the whole Wiki syntax, etc.

"Désiree"

User:Ralph, Let's call her Ralph has persistently tried to insert the following (or similar) text :- Her treatment of the song "Desiree", a cover which she adapted and re-titled, is considered by Ari Fox Lauren, the foremost authority on the music of Laura Nyro, to be an open expression of same-sex attraction on Laura's part. It is a noteworthy coincidence that the name Desiree and the last name of Laura's eventual life partner, Maria Desiderio, both mean desire. This has now been reverted several times asPOV and unverified. Firstly, the coincidence is irrelevant (she recorded the song before meeting Desiderio). Secondly, the view that the song is "an open expression of same-sex interest" is just that, a view, unverified. The comment COULD (though I'm not really recommending it) be modified further to make it more tentative, but I really don't think there's any merit in a specific reference to Ari Fox Lauren - who may or may not be an "authority" on Nyro. In my view, the paragraph is better without any reference to the interpretation of "Desiree", but if anyone can come up with a better compromise wording than the one I suggested earlier, please do so. That part of the text is now (as of today, 17 July 07) pretty much OK. I've just added an article on The Charts, which incidentally points out that the spelling "Desiree" (rather than "Deserie") was first used by The Charts themselves in a 1967 re-recording (rather than first being used by Nyro in 1971). IN REPLY The actual spelling by Laura was "Désiree." It is not irrelevant that Desiderio and "Désiree," both mean desire; it is remarkable! There is no evidence gainsaying that Laura and Maria knew each other prior to 1971. In fact, Michele Kort in Soul Picnic (p. 196) wrote "None of Nyro's close friends are certain how she met Maria..." Kort also wrote about Maria and "Laura- who friends say had not previously been with a woman lover-..." No one knows exactly how, when or where Laura and Maria first met. I issue this challenge. "you tube" The Charts "Deserie" and then listen to Laura's "Désiree." Just count the number of times the Charts recite Deserie (3) and Laura sings Désiree (13). Tell me "Désiree" is not unmistakably a Sapphic reverie. Parenthetically, there is authoritative evidence, that as far back as 1967, Laura was wooing a woman. If as Kort wrote Maria was Laura's first "women lover," then it stands to reason that Maria was also the inspiration for "Emmie." Pete Johnson in his June 1968 review of Eli and the Thirteenth Confession in Coast FM & Fine Arts(p. 50) commented about the song “Emily.” “There is a momentary shock at hearing a woman romancing another woman...” Alanna Nash in her April 25, 1997 musical comment “Passion Player” on EW.com touted "Emmie" as “pop’s first lesbian love song.” My thanks to Ghmyrtle for "disputing the passage." I don't know enough about the details of her life to question your comments, but I will put a [citation needed] tag on your claim that they met in 1967, which as far as I can see is still unreferenced. From my reading of WP:External links, I do not see any guidance that states external links must be used as sources; in fact, it is clear to me from the guidance and examples in WP:EL that external links do not have to be used as sources in the subject article. Therefore, I plan to revert this edit to Laura Nyro and restore those external links. If anyone thinks any of the individual links do not meet the criteria specified in WP:EL, or meets the criteria of links to be avoided, feel free to delete those individual external links. --hulmem (talk) 22:35, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

It is my opinion that the information related on the Laura Nyro page is accurate. Most bio points are widely known and come from published interviews with the subject and/or her associates, peers and friends. Album release information is accurate. This is, frankly, one of the more articulate and well-written music bios on wikipedia.

description

The description of her music is odious. There's nothing Tin Pan Alley about it. It reeks of originality. No one else in pop music had influences from Debussy as well as Gospel and jazz in it. I would say her main influences are jazz, gospel and classical music. Several songs are not pop, they are serious cabaret songs, where her lyrics become real poetry and not ersatz poetry, like many lyrics that are just strings of images. She was one of the first singer-songwriters and helped define the genre.98.140.79.183 (talk) 15:52, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
