"Brief Description and Show Development" to "Series Overview"?

I renamed the "Brief Description and Show Development" section to "Series Overview"; do you think that new name looks more proper than the old name?

I think it's fine. Etacar11 21:32, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

"Benson was an example of promise though her father was a serial rapist." I thought her mother was raped and she didn't know who here father was (except that he was a rapist|was he caught?).

"I'm Not Driving Anymore" as theme?

Towards the end of the page, there's a link about the "theme" of the show, "I'm Not Driving Anymore (Instrumental)" by Rob Dougan. But the theme to the show is a remix of the original "Law and Order" theme. Is this a mistake or does another country have a different theme than the US? TonicBH

This is a mistake. In all probability this theme is used in other countries. I will removed it. --ThomasK 03:32, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

Actor overlap with Oz

There's a huge overlap from Oz to SVU - obviously with Meloni, but also BD Wong as a regular. Recurring and one-off guests include (from their Oz names, only):

- Schillinger (J.K Simmons) - Beecher (Lee Tergeson) - Ryan O'Reilly (Dean Winters) - Miguel Alvarez (Kirk Acevedo) - Stanislofsky (Phillip Casnoff)

Oh, and on and on. Anyone else notice this crossover? And if so, is it worth noting? KirkBroadhurst 10.47pm 7 August 2005 AEST

  • The crossover occurs because they are (mostly) all actors living in the New York area and both shows are shot there. A footnote in Trivia, maybe. --Etacar11 14:06, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Season Episodes

Why were the season episode pages deleted? They went down just today

  • Yes, I was about to ask that very question. I find those pages very useful to keep track of which episodes I have seen while catching up on the show on USA. I have a feeling this has something do with some new dumb policy of getting rid of episodes guides because Wikipedia is underneath them or some such rot (as I saw over at the Day Break Discussion Page). Tehr 05:18, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
  • It says a copyright violation. (this one actually: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:CSD#G12) I dont understand why all these pages would be deleted when for the most part they were first hand accounts of the episodes. Any way to get them back?

Stephanie March

Why did Stephanie March leave SVU? There appears to be no reason. --Kilo-Lima 18:46, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

I think she thought she was on the cusp of a film or tv career (ala Jill Hennessey) and wanted wider exposure and different roles. This seems to be supported by her appearance in the Chris Rock movie (the one where he runs for President). Or it could of been another case of Dick Wolf calling a bluff on salary. That's happened a half-dozen times on his shows ;-) -- SeanO 00:09, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

To my understanding, she got tired of the character. Then, that leaves open the question as to why she returned in Conviction, though it is possible that she saw it as different, as much of it is focused on the ADAs. On Conviction, she was also a Bureau Chief, so it was rare that she served as an active prosecutor; she was responsible for overseeing many of the prosecutors, but it was n't common for her to actually prosecute cases, least not small ones, as a Bureau Chief. Michael 03:19, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
From what I remember when her departure was first announced, it was stated that she was interested in pursuing film projects. There were rumors she was about to be cast in the Fantastic Four film, which clearly did not happen. Believing that there were a number of film projects she was missing out on by continuing to act on SVU, she chose to leave. I do not believe Dick Wolf pushed her out, since he pursued her for SVU in the first place. He also made a statement around the same time saying that Stephanie was always welcome to come back to SVU at any point, that the door was always open for her. He did not do this for many of his other actresses who played lawyers on L&O. Kris 16:06, 4 June 2006 (UTC)kc12286

This IP keeps editing in information without adding context, significance, or wikilinks. Any ideas? I'm not sure how a CTV broadcasting the show in a different aspect ratio is that noteworthy.

Also:
The current season, numbered 7, premiered on 20 September 2005. On January 3, 2006, the show changed to widescreen format on the CTV network in Canada. (Please mention it somewhere in the page)
is very bad form. --sigmafactor 03:38, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

WHY the heck is Law & Order: SVU being vandalized?

I already saw TWO vandalistic changes on this page, and it's making me think the perpetrators are goth kids sent by either Jeff Hardy or Bam Margera. Can someone who hates vandalism (or people administrating this page) tell me what's going on and give me advice on how to stop these "idiots" from vandalizing this page? I'm getting TIRED of this vandalism!!

International airings

Not sure if someone wants to edit the page for this;

Currently under the International heading the show is described as being broadcast first on Five, with repeats on Hallmark.

Hallmark actually air the show first, and are due to start showing season seven in the next few weeks. Five are near the end of season three. Both frequently show repeats of the show - not just Hallmark, as the page also mentions.

Also, as I'm sure there is with a few broadcasters, Hallmark use the original titles (and boast that nothing about the show is changed from the original production), whereas Five drop the opening title, going straight to the opening scene. The titles are then in the style of the other L&O franchises on the channel, using a heavier version of the Rob Dougan track I'm Not Driving Anymore, which is also used for the original and Criminal Intent.

Didn't want to start editing the page if it isn't worthy of it.

Trivia: Missing Baby

This is a response to those who are questioning the following Trivia information:

In 2003, Law & Order: SVU attracted some heavy criticism from the Media in Australia, where a baby girl was kidnapped similar to an episode of Law & Order shown a week earlier. The baby girl was kidnapped in a shopping mall, whose hair was cut and clothes changed to avoid attention and disguise her (as done in an episode in SVU). The baby girl was found later and safely returned. After the event, Australian Police have stated that criminals have gotten smarter from watching crime shows.

Although it is noted that this type of situation is an urban legend [1], this event did happen. Unfortunately, since the event occurred a long time ago, it has been virutally impossible to retrieve any reliable internet sources. I plan to search through Sydney Morning Herald databases from 2002 later on and cite from that.

If you have a SMH database from 2002, look through it and see if you can find it. Also, if one does find it, how do you cite it? Do you take a print screen? --Taipan198 07:20, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

New Partner

Doesn't Olivia have a new partner in the new episodes? I won't edit, but doesn't she?

Ummm...The new season didn't begin yet. Due to the fact that some shows are currently being taped while she is on maternity leave, some of the shows next season will include another detective alongside Stabler. I don't know what you're talking about. Michael 04:18, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Connie Nielsen will have a six-episode arc as Warrant Officer Dani Beck. Mariska Hargitay and her character, Detective Olivia Benson, will be appearing in the first two episodes of Season 8, scheduled to premiere on September 19, 2006, after which Benson will go undercover (I believe). Nielsen and her Beck character will be in Episodes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the new season, and Hargitay and her Benson character will return for Episode 9. The first two episodes of the new season were already taped before Mariska went on maternity leave. That is the reason that things are happening like they are. GOYANKSGONJ 20:35, 23 July 2006 (CDT)

Cast pictures and Plot Inspirations

Is it really necessary to have three separate pictures of the show's cast? The most current one should be sufficient, with explanations in the article of who's come and gone since the series' beginning.

Also, I think the Plot Inspirations section could benefit from some reformatting, or even Wikitabling, since "The Season X episode" is really redundant. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 04:55, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I disagree about the pictures. We should include them for the purpose of showing the entire cast at different times. Michael 04:59, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
I think I have to agree that the many photos are a bit much. Law & Order's article features only a picture of the current cast and the Criminal Intent article features only a cast of the original cast and the current cast. Too many photos distracts from the article. Redfarmer (talk)

"Other guest stars"

The subsection on other guest stars really seems to be getting out of control. Certainly, some of these guest stars are more important or significant than others, yes? But, a long list, without any explanation, and not in chronological order, does not seem terribly helpful. Any thoughts? ---Charles 02:15, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Olivia returns next week

Yep it's true, but whats weird is i thought the 6 episodes were in chronological order. Its only been four weeks so far. Also, Olivia has long hair.

That was an old episode. The new one is next week. Michael 13:02, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't watch this show all the time, but now and then I see an episode, and I know that Olivia is partner with that other guy, can't remember his name. But then I saw an episode on USA, seems rather newer cuz of hair styles, and in it Olivia and the guy are no longer partners and it seems as if something happen between them and now they are not soo good of friends. So... my questions is.. what did I miss?? Why aren't they friends any more? :)

Olivia refused to shoot someone who was holding a gun to Eliot's head, because she realized she actually has feelings (sexual or not is questionable) for him, and would never want to see him die. Eliot finds this to be bad form for an officer, realizes that they mean too much to eachother and Olivia asks to be reassigned. She was on maternity leave for 6 episodes, and now Connie Neilsen is Eliot's new partner. I can't wait until she leaves.75.67.237.192 06:06, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

alleged rape?

How can a fictional rape be "alleged"? Nobody's on trial. Olivia's mother was raped. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TaylorTeach (talkcontribs) 03:31, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Olivia herself questioned whether or not her mother was really raped, or if it was consensual. This was last season, during the episodes when she learned who her father's identity and met her brother. I can't remember at the moment if there was enough evidence to know for sure, so long after the fact. AnmaFinotera (talk) 03:59, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

'Controversial Subject Matter'

Unless there's a specific citation, I think this section should be deleted, given all other three Law & Orders have featured rape, child abuse and all the 'hot button' issues listed - it's certainly not unique, beyond the fact that SVU (used to) focus on the first two almost exclusively. 124.187.212.9 (talk) 23:59, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Looking for help writing an article about the spin-offs and crossovers of this series

I am writing an article about all of the series which are in the same shared reality as this one through spin-offs and crossovers. I could use a little help expanding the article since it is currently extremely dense and a bit jumbled with some sentence structures being extremely repetitive. I would like to be able to put this article into article space soon. Any and all help in writing the article would be appreciated, even a comment or two on the talk page would help. Please give it a read through, also please do not comment here since I do not have all of the series on my watch list. - LA @ 17:02, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

16th Precinct

What is the source for saying that the show is set in the fictional 16th precinct? I always had the impression that the SVU unit depicted in the series has jurisdiction for all of Manhattan. They also refer to the SVU of other boroughs; for example Chester Lake (Law & Order) had previously been assigned to "Brooklyn SVU". --Mathew5000 (talk) 12:49, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

The name 16th precinct was used for the unit extensively in the first season. Redfarmer (talk) 19:15, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Dani Beck, Junior Detective

Under the Junior Detective catagory with Monique Jeffries also has Dani Beck for season 8, i think Dani Beck should go in the catagory for Junior Detective with Oliva Benson for season 8, because that's who Dani Beck replaced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.116.33.54 (talk) 22:19, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Olivia: Junior or Senior?

A user seems bent on making Olivia a senior detective. However, throughout the first season, she was consistently referred to as Elliott's "junior partner." Nothing in the subsequent seasons has suggested this has changed and any speculation outside the series would be a violation of WP:OR. This is consistent with the other L&O series. Remember, Goren is still the junior detective on CI after all these years (this was confirmed in a recent episode).

I would suggest the burden of proof that Olivia is a senior detective now is on the person who keeps changing her title. If you can provide evidence, please do so. Otherwise, please quit engaging in OR. Redfarmer (talk) 04:18, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

I just reverted the same edit again. I agree with the comments from Redfarmer above. Unless there is proof that Benson is a Senior Detective she should remain as junior. Jonesy (talk) 09:44, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Brief nudity

I read on many credible websites that the show has brief nudity scenes. Now seeing it myself I did notice side shots of breasts and bottom. Even the episode with Robin Williams you could see a partial nipple (of an assumed underage girl), I know I also read about it so I am not the only one to mention it. I think if anyone else finds those articles, it should be in the text. --98.172.115.234 (talk) 02:27, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Abbie Carmichael A.D.A. Season 1

I believe instead of having "Various" for A.D.A during season 1, it should be changed to Abbie Carmichael (Angie Harmon), because it even says it in Abbie Carmichael's wikipedia profile that she is the A.D.A for season 1 in SVU and she stays until she is replaced by Cabot in Season 2.

This is inaccurate as anyone who has watched the complete first season can attest. She was only ADA in eight episodes, the last of which was the mid-season crossover. The rest of the time a number of ADAs filled the position. Since she was not even ADA for the majority of episodes of the season, I strongly object to this change. Redfarmer (talk) 09:33, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Brian Cassidy and Monique Jeffries

I think Brian Cassidy (Dean Winters) and Monique Jeffries (Michelle Hurd) should be in the same area "Junior Detective" for the Characters chart. After Brian Cassidy left, Monique Jeffries took over and they did not serve simaltanoiusly in SVU so they should be in the same collum. I'm not an expert at doing this and I would like someone who knows more about the charts to do it.

Have you watched the first season? They did serve together. One episode even saw them go out to question a suspect together. Redfarmer (talk) 09:34, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Well Jeffries was seen rarely with him and she became a more important character after Cassidy left. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.116.129.138 (talk) 22:05, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

I have removed this:

From April to November 2003, Fred Dalton Thompson (District Attorney Arthur Branch) was a recurring guest star on this series while simultaneously being a regular cast member on Law & Order.

Stephanie March's return delayed

It says that Stephanie March's return to SVU was delayed from Feb. 17 because of a "Dateline NBC" episode. The source cited does not fit with this information; it also says the 17th, as do the other sites I have found. Where's the source for this? Is it even true? Southeasttitan (talk) 02:33, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm glad you brought this up and I'm backing you up with edits. Not only is there no cite to link as a reference, but it's completely irrelevant. Delays in a scheduled episode and the "usual format" for a "Dateline" episode have nothing to do with Stephanie March returning to the show. I have removed this extraneous (and, I might add, very unclear and poorly written text) from the article and also merged the statement into the A.D.A. paragraph above and removed the also irrelevant mention of March's guest appearance on "Conviction", as this also has no bearing on the topic of this page. While it certainly would belong in an article about March (or possibly, "Conviction", it has no place here. Hope this doesn't step on any toes. Rewrite

Just to give everyone a heads up, I'm about to start a major rewrite of the article. If you can find sources, fine. Otherwise, your suggestion would violate the policy of no original research. Redfarmer (talk) 13:09, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
No original research? YOU said that YOU wanted to rewrite the article. The anon editor made a suggestion to you on something to include. Either YOU include it and YOU find sources, or you tell him/her that you don't want to add that. Don't prance in here and say that you are rewriting the article and then tell people that they need to find sources for recommendations they make to you. YOU are rewriting the article. And it's no secret that L&O SVU has strayed off the deep end. Just ask the "reproductive abusers". Primium mobile (talk) 13:05, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Redfarmer said he was rewriting the article, not adding to it. He said if anyone had any questions on his changes, to let him know here or on his talk page. He wasn't on here taking taking a question and answer on what to include. Editors are encouraged to be bold, not rely on everybody else to do the work. And god, this was a year and half ago, and Redfamer is retired... chill out. —Mike Allen 03:38, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
I know it was a year and a half ago. I can read too. And I also know that he is retired. This is for the benefit of anyone else who wants to do a "rewrite". Don't mistake my candor for a lack of "chill". It's very annoying how high-brow so many editors are on this site. The guy gave a suggestion. Redfarmer said he was going to do a REWRITE. That means adding additional, relevant information. This particular editor had a habit of being very protective of his pages and he would have not taken kindly to another editor taking the be bold suggestion to heart. I, however; am perfectly ok with editors being protective of their pages, so long as they are open to suggestions and don't just dismiss another, obviously new, editor's suggestion with the wave of a hand. A "complete rewrite" is a lot of work. If any editor isn't prepared to do a lot of work, then they shouldn't be trying to do a "complete rewrite" In doing all that work, it wouldn't have killed Redfarmer to tell this guy where to find information on what sources are acceptable. It would have taken him exactly as long as it took him to type out the no original research. He didn't do it because he, like most other long time editors on this site, are very hostile to newcomers. And it annoys the crap out of me. But my temperature is just fine. I'm annoyed, not angry. Primium mobile (talk) 21:53, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
It's also unrealistic in its portrayal of courtroom issues. I watched an episode the other day which showed a technical expert doing a bad job on the witness stand -- the prosecuting attorney did nothing to counter the impression left by the pro se defendant -- and a pair of final statements based on emotional i.e. pejorative issues in which the prosecuting attorney failed to trace the chain of evidence. She wouldn't be a prosecuting attorney for long with a foul up like that.

Technical information

It would be good to have technical information on how the episodes were shot, like the Technical section in Law & Order: Criminal Intent:

Related shows

Why was my edit of including Homicide:Life on the Street deleted when it IS a related show as Richard Belzer who plays Detective John Munch on the series first played Munch on Homicide? It seems to qualify as a related show based on that. Please put it back as I cannot since it is now a locked article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.199.204.195 (talk) 05:05, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

bad syntax

"After starring in the Dick Wolf-produced Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee and guest starring as Detective Chester Lake in the eighth season, Wolf felt that Adam Beach would be a good addition to the cast and asked him to be a permanent member beginning with the ninth season" The gerund phrase at the start of a sentence always refers to the subject of the dominant clause; in this case it would mean that Wolf started in "Bury My Heart." If he didn't star in the film he produced, rewrite this sentence to get rid of the gerund so you can see how to phrase what you really meant. 4.249.63.42 (talk) 13:48, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Hargitay will be in every episode of 2011-2012 season of SVU

So said NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt to reporters at the Aug 1 Television Critics Association press tour. See, e.g., Zap2It: 'Law & Order: SVU': Mariska Hargitay isn't going anywhere, NBC chief says and similar news sources. Her filming schedule may still be reduced due to her family's newly-adopted baby. --173.76.60.214 (talk) 16:24, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Lead section

Per WP:MOSINTRO, the information in the lead of articles should be a summation of important points in the rest of the article. I'm willing to allow the two new leads to stay, but B.D. Wong's departure and the return of March and Neal (especially since no one knows how many episodes they will be in yet, per WP:CRYSTAL), are not important points in the article and are accurately reflected in their respective sections (i.e. they are no more important than other departures and additions over the course of the series). The lead section is NOT for news about the series. This is not a fan site. 74.130.135.208 (talk) 17:51, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Dean Winters???

How come Dean Winters isn't listed in the current/former cast section. He was a star during the first half of season one and has been a recurring character in season 14 and 15. KitHutch (talk) 02:16, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

I watched season one and Dean Winters was not part of the main cast. Affe 37,5 (talk) 15:42, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

What is an "arc"?

Hi. I see a number of mentions to actors and and "arc" in a specific series. It is not incuded in the "arc" disambiguation page. I hazard a guess that it means a number of episodes in a row for an actor who is not part of the 'permanent' cast. It that it? Thanks. Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 21:14, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose, no copyvios, spelling and grammar): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (reference section): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images and other media, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free content have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
  • The lead is a bit messy. Make sure it follows the structure of the article. Particularly, there's not really much about reception and nothing about production encapsulated in the lead. You sort of do a little bit of statistics followed by cast and plot and then accolades and then just a sentence about renewal.
  • Specific things in the lead—the commas in the first sentence between genres are weird, and "ripped from the headlines" is either informal or an unattributed quote.
  • The Green and Dawn source is a bit troubling for me. If it's in the forward written by the series creator, that's definitely a reliable source. But much of it, attributed to pages in the 100s or 200s, cannot be in the forward. And if it were talking about interpretation, that's one thing. But why are these Green and Dawn people reliable for statements of fact?
  • continued to "haunt" Wolf is informal
  • You don't need "reflecting the sexual nature of the crimes depicted on the show" part—that's pretty clear.
  • Is virtually an entire paragraph sourced to two pages of the book?
  • Why does this section suddenly skip to when the pilot aired? From this point on should be moved to broadcast history.
  • "As the NYPD encounters varied…" This is kind of POV--don't close paraphrase from Wolf's words in the encyclopedia's voice.
  • How is the fact that the studio space had air conditioning and adequate parking relevant?
  • "The show originally aired…on varying days in marathon blocks" This entire paragraph is unsourced. I tagged it.
  • This "cast and characters" table isn't necessary for the main article.
  • This is a lot of non-free images in the section. You can get away with one, but four is way too many.
  • Most of the first paragraph of this section is cited to one page of the book?
  • Much of this section is sourced to the later half of the book, which makes its reliability questionable for me.
  • I am particularly concerned about much of the fifth paragraph, as it appears to be a lot of material uncited (or possibly cited to a source of dubious reliability).
  • Ref 33 is dead.
  • Sixth paragraph also cited entirely to possibly non-RS.
  • Same with seventh…
  • The series overview section should probably be expanded, and you also flip-flop around chronologically. Besides, this should also probably be the first section.
  • The first "episodes" paragraph is unsourced…
  • Dates in the table should be sourced.
  • Four of the six crossovers are unsourced.
  • The "U.S. television ratings" prose paragraph is unsourced.
  • There are over ten dead links in the ratings table.
  • The Golden Globe ref is dead.

So some pretty big problems. :) I will give you the opportunity of a few days to respond to comments or decide what to do. I don't know why you nominated this article, considering that it appears that you haven't edited the article (at least in the last 500 edits). Anyways, I personally recommend that if you want to continue working on this article, you should take the comments and fix them before taking it to peer review and renominating again instead of attempting to rush to fix them in a period of a few days, but of course, it's up to you. Cast Table

Something seems to have happened to the Character Table. Formatting equations are visible all over. I'd fix it myself, but I've never edited tables. Birdsong1954 (talk) 16:00, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

This table is actually taken from List of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit characters through a selective transclusion. The table was broken by this edit which is fixed now. –Dark Cocoa Frosting (talk) 16:46, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

New character

Shouldn't Sergeant Mike Dodds (played by Andy Karl) be added to the character listing on the page since he is now the sergeant of the team and a official recurring character?--Donovan Ellis (talk) 22:14, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
