an important doctrinal work
[edit]"the Lectures remain an important doctrinal work in most Latter Day Saint denominations"(and then a reference to the LDS church.) I agree with that in spirit, but not necessarily semantically. I was just in a Gospel Doctrine class this weekend, when the well-versed teacher mentioned the history of the Lectures on Faith, and said, "Does anyone know if it's even still published anymore? I've never seen one." Of 60 people in the room, half of whom had served missions and whatever, only 3 or 4 people knew it was even still published, and no one owned one or quite knew whether the church itself published the version those of us who had seen one had seen. To call it "an important doctrinal work in most Latter Day Saint denominations" (exempting the LDS church, the Community of Christ, and surely the only others with a statistical significance) is therefore not quite accurate. --Mrcolj (talk) 17:00, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
Status in the D&C
[edit]The article now reads:
- This is in contrast to the remaining pages of the original Doctrine and Covenants which are officially recognized by nearly all Latter Day Saint denominations as divine revelation given specifically to the church.
My understanding is that the LDS Doctrine & Covenants and the RLDS Doctrine & Covenants are effectively two different books with the same title. There is significant intersection in the content but they are not the same book because of the content differences. I believe this sentence means to refer to the 'revelations' in the volumes, but in it's present form, the article suggests that the D&C is a single monolithic book when it really isn't.
The title "Doctrine & Covenants" was derived from the structure of the printed volume. It contained the Doctrine (the Lectures of Faith) and the Covenants. (the revelations) Since the Doctrine (the Lectures of Faith) have been removed, it would be more accurate to be consistent in changing the title as well to, "The Covenants" or "Covenants of the Church." (Jon Tandy has written about this.) I am not saying that printing the Lectures of Faith and the revelations separately is any sort of problem or bad somehow, but it does make the title "Doctrine & Covenants" an archaism. --BenMcLean (talk) 22:46, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
- Regardless of what Wikipedians might think is logical, as far as naming conventions, the truth of the matter is that both TCoJCoLDS & CoC retain the name "Doctrine and Covenants" as a proper name for the book. Wikipedia is a reporter of what is (provided that there are reliable sources, etc), not what we believe should be. -- 155.95.90.240 (talk) 18:45, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
