backstory about the Tampa Stadium incident[edit]

a little backstory about this event (I was not at the stadium that night, but I was at work listening to the various radio reports of what happened) ...

On June 3, after an open-air concert at Tampa Stadium was cut short because of a severe thunderstorm, a riot broke out amongst the audience, resulting in 19 arrests and 50 fans being injured.

Led Zeppelin had a stage setup in the south end-zone (of the old Tampa Stadium). During the concert, a large thunderstorm crossed the stadium area. The stage had a large canopy over it, presumably to deal with just such a storm. The canopy over the stage took on water, some of which did not drain off, but caused the canopy to sag downward in the middle (the band was still playing). Someone on the staff noticed what was happening and called a stop to the concert. There was concern that the canopy might break, dumping all that water on the band and the various pieces of live gear. The crew tried to get the canopy to drain backwards behind the stage, but that was not possible (due to the weight of the water). The only solution was to punch a hole in the canopy and dump it on the stage, clear the water from the stage and resume the concert. To do that, they had to pull all the equipment out of the way temporarily. At that point, the audience became unruly (having already been subjected to the storm and assuming that LZ was abandoning the gig), and began throwing stuff on the stage. Security and TPD tried to intervene and things went downhill (i.e. a mini riot broke out). At that point the concert was abandoned, and many people were transported to St Joseph's Hospital (about a mile east of the stadium).
