Did George Galloway Call for John Rees Resignation?

[edit]

(cur) (last) 23:00, 11 April 2008 Charliewbrown (Talk | contribs) (8,092 bytes) (→The crisis in Respect: GG did not call for Rees' resignation!) (undo)

I am aware that several members of the SWP central committee stated that George Galloway called for John Rees's resignation to an audience of over 200+ people (of which I was present). They stated that George Galloway called for John Rees resignation at a Respect leadership meeting that took place before "the letter" was published. I don't think at any point George Galloway denied this.

Where might I be able to find a reference for this?

I therefore assume that you're a member of the SWP, (as I was until recently) and this was the London-wide members meeting in September.
Far from calling for Rees' resignation, George called for the appointment of a National Organiser to support the National Secretary in his/her duties. In fact, in an attempt to be diplomatic, George nominated Nick Wrack, a leading member of the SWP, for the post. This, and all the other suggestions in the letter from George, were accepted and voted for unanimously by the National Council before the split. And then the lies and deceit started...
You won't find a reference for George calling for Rees' resignation, because no such call was made.--Charliewbrown (talk) 08:26, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move to 'Left Alternative'

[edit]

The rename is now quite official, with the latest bulletin saying that the respectcoalition.org email address stops working this week. We should move this from Left List to Left Alternative. --Duncan (talk) 15:48, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've created Left Alternative and Left List now redirects there. Bondegezou (talk) 15:59, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ideology and position

[edit]
The infobox for this article has long listed Left Alternative's ideology as "socialism" and their position as "far left". User:Helper201 has removed these and re-removed them after I provided citations, arguing the citations were insufficient.

Helper201: what ideology and/or position do you believe best describes Left Alternative if not socialism and far left?

I cited "Against the Grain: The British Far Left from 1956", edited by Evan Smith & Matthew Worley, which mentions the Left List (the initial name for the Left Alternative) and describes it as being formed by the Socialist Workers Party (SWP). The SWP is described on its Wikipedia article as far left for position, and Marxism/Neo-Trotskyism/Revolutionary socialism for ideology.

For the Left Alternative's ideology, I cited this article, which says, "The Left List is standing leading anti-war campaigner and socialist Lindsey German". Helper201 argues this is insufficient because it only shows that German is socialist, not the Left List/Alternative in general. But German was one of the most significant figures in the party, and her candidacy then perhaps the party's most significant electoral contest. I think that's sufficient connection. I will look for further citations, but it seems to me that those provided and the article as a whole are sufficient. Bondegezou (talk) 09:42, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just because an article has long stated something does not mean it is any more valid. I do not proclaim to know the ideologies or the position of the party. I am just making sure correct evidence is provided for any claims. Just because a party is formed by another party does not mean it has an identical position or ideologies.
As for your claim on ideology, as said a persons individual ideological identification does not in turn mean the party has the same ideology. For example, one of the co-convenors of the Scottish Green Party, Maggie Chapman, identifies as a socialist, but the party doesn't self identify as a socialist party. I have provided several citations. Given you've deleted these, I presume you've looked at them. Having read them all, what do you think the ideology/political position of Left Alternative is? Bondegezou (talk) 21:03, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
