Housing prices

[edit]

I don't know how long ago this article was created, but single family houses in the area start at $550,000. So the medium household income has to be far above $35,000 to support those figures.

The median household income figure is from 2000, but throughout California--particularly in central cities--housing prices are increasingly bearing no resemblance to the economic status of the people living in a given area. I doubt the median household income has gone above $50,000. --75.2.221.178 08:05, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, no one said these prices are supportable. -Will Beback 08:44, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When the article began

[edit]

It began in 2006 with one paragraph by an unnamed contributor! https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Leimert_Park,_Los_Angeles&oldid=6584201 BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 16:20, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Leimert Park and John Singleton

[edit]

I was born and raised in Leimert Park. John Singleton is by no means it's most famous resident (Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, The Mills Brothers, Billy Preston, Mayor Tom Bradley, and too many more to even mention, including Stu Gilliam and Butch "Earthquake" Johnson, would probably balk at the mere suggestion). In fact, after "Boys In The Hood" (Singleton's movie that put him on the map), Leimert became a hotbed of national/international curiosity. I feel, along with many other residents that that movie "ruined" a certain wonderfulness that existed prior to his choosing our community as an area he used in his film(s). I do not know when he started or even if he actually resides in Leimert. By the way, I have nothing against Mr. Singleton. However, I take umbrage to folks claiming the neighborhood. Representing since 1968...

Sincerely, D.W. NOWELS

Fair enough. I've changed the wording about Singleton to correct that problem, and started a "Notable residents" list. Please add to it. Cheers, -Will Beback 19:46, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The lede . . .

[edit]

I'm not in accord with the removal of important facts about Leimert Park from the lede, but I am willing to talk it over. LP is justly known as the center of black culture in Los Angeles. Shouldn't that be reflected in the lede through the use of simple statistics, or is there some other way of doing it, or shouldn't it be done at all? Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 15:25, 27 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Try to stick to sources

[edit]

It is nice to flesh out any article with well-researched facts, but where there is already a citation, or reference, we must be sure we are not adding anything beyond what is in that ref. If we have new stuff, we should be sure that is referenced, too. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 18:59, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

geography

[edit]

I have added some additional sources for the boundaries of Leimert Park. Additionally, I removed an odd "note" placed on the google maps citation. Google maps has been cited without note, and for many years, on Wikipedia: 86th Street (Manhattan), Five Points, Manhattan, Forest Hills, Queens, New York State Route 268, Trans-Canada Highway, Mutundwe, Dixon, Illinois, Miami Beach Architectural District, Curiosity Creek, Tampa, Georgia, New Jersey, South Carolina Highway 28, Antelope Wells, New Mexico, New Kent County, Virginia...

If there needs to be a further discussion of this, it should not be done multiple times on individual Los Angeles pages. This is a larger issue than just Los Angeles. Per the banner on the Google maps Talk page, discussion relevant toWikipedia policy should be taken to the Village Pump. Phatblackmama (talk) 21:41, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Per linked reference: Google Maps and Google Street View may be useful for some purposes, including finding and verifying geographic coordinates and other basic information like street names. However, especially for objects like boundaries (of neighborhoods, allotments, etc.), where other reliable sources are available they should be treated preferentially to Google Maps and Google Street View. It can also be difficult or impossible to determine the veracity of past citations, since Google Maps data is not publicly archived, and may be removed or replaced as soon as it is not current. Inferring information solely from Street View pictures may be considered original research. Fettlemap (talk) 14:30, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree.
Disagree with your use of Explanatory notes. The examples of notes given "add additional information relating to the main content"; notes are not used to discredit the source itself.
Please note that since 2007, Wikipedia has a specific template for "referencing maps published by Google, Inc. through their Google Maps service".
If you look back over the other Los Angeles pages where you added your "note", you will see it has been deleted by other users, not just myself. If you wish to add this note, you need to have consensus - particularly when there is both a template for this source, years of prior usage, and more than one distinct user who has deleted your note. But instead of seeking consensus, you instead read my July 15 message pointing out usage, and simply added your note to additional pages that same day.
Please consider ....A year ago, someone felt strongly that OpenStreetMaps should no longer be used because they are WP:USERGENERATED. OpenStreetMap is also listed as crowdsourced material here. These reasons are similar as to why you dislike usage of google maps. Yet despite these seemingly obvious reasons -- when discussion ensued, there were 12 "remove" and 15 "keep". [1].
Consensus matters. As the OpenStreetMap discussion noted above took place at the "Village Pump (proposals)", I once again suggest a discussion of google map usage here. Phatblackmama (talk) 21:54, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with PBM. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 04:54, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
