Need more sources
[edit]For a psychiatrist who was president of the APPA and written several books I am having a really hard time finding any real info on him. Going to post any links here that I can find that might help us clue in to where we can dig up more sources/info for this article.
- http://w3.ouhsc.edu/neuro/division/cope/tologist.htm "Why should you see an Epileptologist" - he (at least I'm assuming its him) is mentioned in the first pargraph of this webpage: Others picked up on this term as evidenced by L. Pierce Clark's chapter "A Suggestion to Epileptologists" found in Transactions of the National Association for the Study of Epilepsy and the Care and Treatment of Epileptics. Vol. IV. Ed. W.P. Spratling, Sixth annual meeting, New Haven, Conn. November 8, 1906l pp.204-212
- http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/content/vol43/issue1/index.dtl "ORIGINAL ARTICLES AND CLINICAL CASES" mentions something written by him called A PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION OF ESSENTIAL EPILEPSY.
- http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/content/vol49/issue3/index.dtl "ORIGINAL ARTICLES AND CLINICAL CASES" mentions something written by him called A PSYCHOBIOLOGICAL CONCEPTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND ITS DISORDERS IN THE EPILEPTIC
- http://medicolegal.tripod.com/preventhearingloss.htm "PREVENT TOBACCO-INDUCED HEARING LOSS" gives this quote from him: By 1907, there was "a full . . . knowledge of the effects of tobacco on the nervous system. . . . A variety of substances have been found in tobacco aside from nicotine. Some of these are pyridin, picolin, tulidin, parvolin, collodin, rubidin, varidin; also carbolic acid and marsh gas." The result is that tobacco "registers a permanent and definite impression in nervous structures when it is used for months or years." "Tobacco is a powerful depressant to the motor or efferent nerves, acting primarily upon their peripheral filaments. . . . The sympathetic ganglia are first stimulated and then depressed by nicotine. . . . In chronic poisoning there is more or less gastroenteritis of a hemorrhagic nature. Ecchymosis occurs in the pleura and peritioneum. Hyperemia of the lungs, brain and cord is found. . . . Coarse lesions have been found in the brain and spinal cord."—L. Pierce Clark, M.D., 71 Medical Record (#26) 1072-1073 (29 June 1907). The above-cited DSM-III shows the rapidity of obvious symptoms, after a mere "at least several weeks."
- http://www.medicalarchives.jhmi.edu/sgml/AMG-AC.htm "Correspondence with individuals and related material" cites several "folders" with "L. Pierce Clark" named. I'm not sure what it means or how to access the info in the folders yet.

- http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/Thomas/Thomas_1927b.html - mentions him again "I was reading in a paper by Dr. L. Pierce Clark that the new-born child does not grasp the mother's breast because he is hungry but in the last struggle not to be re-moved from the womb he holds on with his teeth, so to speak ?"
- http://hdl.handle.net/10079/fa/beinecke.dial - "His personal life, however, was less satisfactory. He had several minor illnesses and in 1919 began analysis with Dr. L. Pierce Clark. On December 20, 1919, Elaine Orr Thayer gave birth to Nancy Thayer, whom all parties believed to be the daughter of E. E. Cummings. By the end of 1920 the Thayers had decided to get a French divorce. In July 1921 he sailed for Europe, where he would remain for over two years."
