Cleanup[edit]

I have just spent hours cleaning up a citation, grammatical, and organizational mess in here. I have not been able to do substantial checking of the content because the citations alone took hours. Please keep the following in mind when adding content:

  1. Venezuela uses international date style (Day Month Year).
  2. English-language cites are preferable to Spanish, although Spanish can be used when nothing else is available. Please stop chunking in too many Spanish citations, when Leopoldo is well covered in the English-language press.
  3. Human Rights Foundation and Thor Halvorssen cannot be used to cite facts, as Thor is Leopoldo's cousin (not an independent third party).

For such an important topic, Wikipedia is an embarrassment once again.

If anyone is interested, the following articles could easily be stubbed:

@SandyGeorgia: Might take up some of these articles since protests a lulling as "elections" approach. Nice to see your eyes around here again.--ZiaLater (talk) 21:50, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@ZiaLater:, you may also be interested in tacking Rafaela Requesens; I left some articles under the External Links at Juan Requesens that could be useful. I wish I had more time to help out .... thanks for all you do! Could you point me to the article about 16 Julio? I will try to follow if I have time ... SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:55, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@SandyGeorgia: I can try to make an article for 16 July since I haven't seen one yet. Not sure of a title.--ZiaLater (talk) 22:27, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming you're referring to the plebiscite, there's an article in Spanish if you want to translate it just to get things started. -- Irn (talk) 02:31, 14 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Irn: Greatly appreciated.--ZiaLater (talk) 04:25, 14 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@SandyGeorgia:@Irn: Here it is, Venezuelan National Consultation, 2017.--ZiaLater (talk) 06:57, 15 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add the remaining articles with the interlanguages links

Pictures of arrest[edit]

Browsing through old photos I noticed I have two pictures of moments before Leopoldo was arrested, although from far away. I don't know if they could be added in the article after being edited. --Jamez42 (talk) 17:58, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't feel like they add much, Jamez42-- not for someone like me, who has seen the upclose photos of that moment, and even less for the casual reader who isn't sure what is happening in that photo or even where Leopoldo is in the photo (we know, but most readers won't). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:06, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Templates[edit]

@Central Intelligence Agency (CIA): Please explain the reason why you're adding the templates. At first sight it seems this account was created only to attack Thor Halvorssen, adding that he died being "Beaten to death by agents of the CIA after his cousin Leopoldo Lopez Mendoza and Juan Guaidó failed to handover the control of Oil reserves in Venezuela to the Federal government of the United States." This, along with the personal against me, should be enough to report in an noticeboard if the edit warring continues. --Jamez42 (talk) 13:24, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Misrepresentation of sources, removal of sourced content, etc[edit]

I have reverted a highly POV edit.

  1. The edit added text unsupported by the source: (one example) "after actively advocating to remove the democratically elected government in a coup, a move even his fellow opposition leaders criticized and then distanced themselves from publicly leading to Leopoldos eventual ouster of the party he helped found". There is more.
  2. The edit also removed text well cited to The New York Times (through supposed subliminal messages).
  3. The edit introduces original research: "Fox News report claimed while providing no evidence that an Opinion poll in late 2014 showed that López had become one of the most popular politicians in Venezuela following his arrest “approaching 50% favorability”." (see also MOS:CURLY)
  4. The source added in the edit is already in the article, and ref name= Ardent can be used to invoke it without repeating it.
  5. We don't refer to individuals by their first name in Wikipedia articles unless that is necessary to avoid confusion (eg father and son with same last name).

SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:48, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

And for readers who may not be aware of the full background to what came to be known as a "coup", and why the edit misrepresents, the other side of the story is that Lopez and Alejandro Plaz and Maria Corina Machado were leading peaceful protests in a very democratic process (a recall referendum), and when Hugo Chavez ordered the military to fire on the peaceful protesters, the military refused, and demanded that Chavez resign. Lopez was not advocating for a coup in the 2002 to 2004 recall effort, covered by the 2014 source. The 2019 Venezuelan uprising attempt is a different event, and you can't use a 2014 source to back into claims about a 2019 event. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:45, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Caution when removing text with dated citations[edit]

Burrobert, please investigate more carefully when removing old text; you might have tagged this first as failed verification so that at least another editor might have done a more thorough examination.

The content was inserted by DaltonCastle in this series of 2014 edits. The original cited source can be found via archive.org. Somewhere along the way, the original citation was changed, apparently; I did not investigate when that happened. Please take greater care in editing. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:30, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's quite a labyrinth to navigate. I would not go to that length without help from Ariadne's ball of string. Burrobert (talk) 15:56, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just asking that you use a failed verification tag before removing content if you don't have time to do the work. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:03, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Right-ho. Burrobert (talk) 16:43, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
