Smear campaign

[edit]

This article absolutely sucks. It is clearly intended to cast Ms. Cagan in a negative light and to harm her reputation. There's nothing more to say because the bias is so overt. This article needs to be re-written or removed immediately. nicefriend 07:29, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ), an "umbrella group" of over 100 left wing groups, including the Young Communist League, Communist Party USA, and various state communist parties, will also be involved in the Jan. 20 protests. The background of the UFPJ leadership is similar to that of International ANSWER.

Leslie Cagan, the national coordinator for UFPJ, is a known supporter of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and in her time as director of the Cuba Information Project, defended Cuba against what she called the "brutality and power of the U.S. government," according to a February 2003 FrontPage Magazine report."

Thanks, Redwolf, for the edits. However, the article is still severely flawed, and I don't even know how to begin revitalizing it without deleting the whole thing. Several facts (even in the first sentence) need citations, and no, FrontPageMag isn't a trustworthy publication. Cagan today is primarily an antiwar activist, which means that her work is about as Communist, Socialist or pro-Castro as it is Democratic. These rallies are about issues, not parties. And Cagan does NOT host rallies "in conjunction" with communist groups like the WWP. Rather, her organization, United for Peace and Justice, is an *umbrella* organization that welcomes *any* antiwar group - yes, that includes some Communist groups - to join in. I would assert that FAR more Democrats than Communists attend Cagan's rallies. But that's besides the point. This article is still mostly a smear attempt. nicefriend 15:38, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cagan truly is a dedicated communist - always has been, always will be. Why are some people trying to hide this fact? Is it so they can dishonestly portray her various leftist, anti-American groups as "politically neutral?" These groups (such as UPJ) are NOT simply a bunch of "peace activists." They are dedicated to the destruction of the United States and they will aid and abet the enemies of the United States any way they can. Cagan is a key member in these communist organizations and we should be vigilant in opposing any efforts to hide this fact.

Show me proof that UFPJ is dedicated to "the destruction of the United States and they will aid and abet the enemies ... any way they can." You can't show proof (or sign your name to this talk page) because you don't have any proof. nicefriend 17:36, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps I should be a little more specific about what I feel needs to change about this article. The biography should be organized chronologically or by importance. Right now, it's organized in neither way. The following statements are erroneous: 1. "Cagan has organized and spoken at many pro-Castro ... ralies." (Anti-war rallies is fine.) 2. "Cagan ... freqently holds demonstrations in conjunction with the WWP or Workers World Party" - not true. Maybe the WWP shows up to Cagan's protests, but she does not hold them in conjunction with the WWP, to my knowledge. Show a citation if you can prove me wrong. 3. "... openly supports the North Korean dictator Kim Il Sung." Kim Il Sung is dead, genius. nicefriend 17:46, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"However, Code Pink, United for Peace and Justice, and the International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition were named as major players in the protests."69.72.29.219 17:58, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PROTEST JANUARY 27TH! On Saturday, January 27, the ANSWER Coalition will march with thousands of others in Washington to call for an end to the Iraq war. The demonstration is called by UFPJ. If you would like to join the ANSWER Coalition in supporting this demonstration on the 27th, call 202-544-3389.

Sounds like they're keeping their distace, right?69.72.29.219 17:58, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some improvements made

[edit]

I cut out a lot of the right wing slam jobs, as they are purely subjective. I think the article is more NPOV now. Also, added a couple references and a little more about Ms. Cagan's background. PeteinDC 15:34 25 April 2007 (UTC)
