Muss ‘em Up

[edit]

Valentine had a hard nosed approach to crime, as well as graft. In NYPD: A City and Its Police, the authors, James Lardner and Thomas Reppetto, describe a police lineup at which Valentine, made an appearance. During the lineup, one of the men standing there, well-dressed and smug, was identified to Valentine as a murderer. He's the best-dressed man in this room, Valentine told the officers present. Yet he's never worked a day in his life. When you meet men like this, don't be afraid to muss 'em up. Men like him should be mussed up. Blood should be smeared all over that velvet collar. The phrase became associated with Valentine, and often appears in news stories and fiction from that period. 2A00:23C5:E0A0:8300:15EB:DCD3:E5C1:63CE (talk) 21:33, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
