Submarines?[edit]

Libya seems to have had some Foxtrot-class submarines in the 1970's. They aren't listed in the list of ships for 1985, and there's no sign here of what happened to them. What's the deal? Bungo77 (talk) 14:27, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe. If you use Google Earth to take a look at the naval dock in Tripoli, one of the moored vessels seems to be similar in size to a submarine (~95m long, 7m beam), darker than the other vessels, with an even darker central superstructure. Astronaut (talk) 02:58, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

May 19/20 bombing[edit]

That photo was taken hours after the Frigate was hit, the damage is considerable but figette could remain in comission following repairs.Tommyxx (talk) 11:33, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Still in existence?[edit]

I have not heard anything new about the navy in months. Surely a good number of the ships are still seaworthy (even if not operational), but I don't think the NTC or its various allied militias have an organized navy yet. They haven't had much of a need to yet, with NATO ships patrolling the coast and surrounding waters for them. Jetpower45 (talk) 04:42, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ships in back in japantimes article, left to right:

  • unidentified ?MCM (not Natya class - double funnel)
  • Gaddafi-era Coast Guard vessel (just refurbished, see May 15)
  • Combattante MFPB (see May 15. Rusty, but afloat. Weapons may be OK, seem at least repairable. Hull probably dubiously seaworthy.)
  • Transport or landing ship (not Polnocny class - helo pad aft, extensively flat deck with crane in front. Italian design or ex-Italian Navy?)

End of transport ship also seen in May 10 dailymail article; next to it a low sleek dark grey vessel (coast guard? not same type as craft in foreground)

Foreground craft has probably Oerlikon 30 mm twin cannon DS30B mount in front of bridge. Likely Gaddafi-era UK design (Vosper?)

Google Earth has, SW to NE:

  • auxillary
  • Frigate 213 Al Ghardabia wreck
  • another wreck almost fully sunk between piers, probably another Combattante
  • 3 auxillary craft + 2 of the low sleek dark grey vessels. No DS30B in front of bridge.
  • Transport/landing ship. 3 cannon mounts visible (2 front 1 back). Probably DARDO: cupola about same size as OTO Melara 76 mm, with wider barrel cutout (-> twin barrel) and prominent "cheeks". Presumably Ibn Ouf class LST (2 vessels, Ibn Ouf & Ibn Harissa, CNIM, 1976-78)
  • Combattante MFPB
  • 3 refurbished Coast Guard vessels discussed in May 15 dailymail article
  • ?MCM with double funnel (a fairly modern design, late 1990s-era or later, layout and dimensions similar to Kingston-class coastal defence vessel)
  • various auxillaries, another transport/landing ship but without cannons (empty mountings clearly visible)
  • more auxillaries, 4th of refurbished vessels from May 15 article, the foreground craft from May 10 articles (DS30B clearly visible), floating crane

Older Google Earth also show a floating dock and another one of the low sleek dark grey craft intermittently present, and until 2014 another Combattante as well as the Natya MCM.

All armed vessels already present before 2011 revolution (I did not keep track of the auxillaries, but the larger ones were also there already).

All armed vessels and at least most auxillaries are being moved between piers occasionally, ie they are at least kept in running condition. They may not be seaworthy, but they are not derelict or hulked.

So as of May 2017 we have the following active forces at the base:

Navy

  • 2 Ibn Ouf class(?) LST
  • 1 Combattante MFPB
  • 1 unknown MSM(?)
  • various tugs, freighters, tankers, floating crane etc

Coast Guard

  • 1 DS30B-armed craft
  • 4 refurbished mid-sized wide craft
  • 2-3 low sleek dark grey craft (possibly the ones seen in some news article with no major armament except a HMG or light cannon on the fo'c'sle)
