We have an article on Amt, to which Verwaltungsgemeinschaft redirects, and which explains what kind of administrative unit it is. And this is the article on a place called Lichtetal am Rennsteig. In neither case is there any great advantage to providing a literal translation, and the place should certainly not be referred to in the rest of the article by that artificial name.

Also, it's important to note that nobody owns an article on Wikipedia; it's a wiki and therefore all writing is collaborative. In any case, the recent edit summary claiming ownership was in error; the creator of this article was Markussep, and it's traditional not to radically change an article creator's wording without good reason, and in this case the article was created by an editor who is very conversant with geographical terminology in Germany and how to render it in English. So there are good reasons not to radically change the terminology, quite apart from the inapplicability of the claim of ownership. --Yngvadottir (talk) 18:41, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

By references, Wikipedia means footnotes. It is not absolutely necessary for every article on a place to have footnotes, but it's increasingly expected, which is why the unreferenced template was added. The best response to that is to add a footnote - maybe to a government page detailing which settlements are included, or to a history (book or website) supporting the date of formation. Otherwise it should just be left as a suggestion to another editor who might know where to find a reference that s/he can add. (And the references section should not be added; in en.wikipedia empty sections are not left in a page.) The translation template is not a reference. Wikipedia itself - in whatever language - cannot be used as a reference. That's why I keep reverting these changes. Do you have a reference - book or website? If so, add it (in the original German) and then the template can be removed. --Yngvadottir (talk) 22:04, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
