University of Missouri

[edit]

Lindsey Vonn didn't attend the University of Missouri. She participated in MU High School. MU High School is a distance learning program for high school students administered by the University of Missouri. She has most likely has never set foot in Columbia. Please make the correction. http://livewire.missouri.edu/2010/02/vonncouver-games.php —Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.201.80.74 (talk) 20:39, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Correction needed

[edit]

Someone who has authority to correct a minor point needs to correct the second paragraph under Personal life. It reads:

"When she was 10 years old she met Olympic gold medal skier Picabo Street, whom she considers her hero and role model."

The correction should be to change "hero" to "heroin." Heroine is the female gender of hero. Picabo Street is a female. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.197.231.166 (talk) 03:03, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done Thank you for that. Sorry you can't edit it yourself, but there have been problems with unregistered editors in the past. HJ Mitchell | fancy a chat? 03:06, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Given the tendency toward gender-neutral nouns, e. g., actor or "server" (waiter/waitress) = male or female, it probably wasn't necessary. No objection, though. Unimaginative Username (talk) 03:35, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reads like a commercial advertisment

[edit]

Th article has numerous references to commercial sponsors, including in the biographical information box. Is this really necessary? I don't see commercial sponsor information under the biographies of Barak Obama or other famous personalities. Are "skiing biographies" a special category that require this commercial information? --mgaved (talk) 13:18, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, I think the information should be removed from the athlete's box as well. The athlete's box should really focus on the athlete's achievements, personal information, etc.Philipmj24 (talk) 20:02, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This talk page is not the correct place for comments about the parameters (such as skis/boots/bindings and sponsor) available in the infobox, Template:Infobox alpine ski racer. Those comments belong at Template talk:Infobox alpine ski racer.
And mgaved, your comment about Obama just makes no sense: the President has no commercial sponsors, while almost all professional athletes do. So it is reasonable that athlete biographies may mention some of the most significant sponsors. For a skier, the brand of skis used is an important detail which often deserves mention. Your claim that this article "Reads like a commercial advertisment"[sic] is hyperbolic and not really true. You are always free to edit and improve the article if you wish to. --Seattle Skier (talk) 07:03, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Age discrepancy

[edit]

"In 1999, Vonn became the first American to win at Italy's Trofeo Topolino (for skiers of 11-14 age)"
If she was born October 18, 1984, she'd have been 15, unless the race were held, or the season started, on or before October 17, 1984, which seems unlikely. Or unless they count your age as of January 1 of that year, which seems even more unlikely, as then almost everyone would be one year higher in age during most of the season. Does anyone know?

Also corrected "of 11-14 age" to "of ages 11-14".

While I was here, fixed yet *another* instance of confusing "regiment" (division of soldiers) with "regimen" (training routine, diet, etc.) Unimaginative Username (talk) 03:22, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Trofeo Topolino takes place at the beginning of March. Kildow would have been 14 for the 1999 race. And, in fact, here's the website link (note that they misspell her last name) -- which leads to the question of whether she or McDonald won first, but who really cares?--AyaK (talk) 20:21, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, it was the 1998-99 season (facepalm) ... shame on me for assuming the 1999 season (-2000). Thanks for clarifying.
As for the results, are those perhaps 1-2 finishes? ... and yes, someone who speaks Italian should write to them to correct the name spelling. Cheers. Unimaginative Username (talk) 07:35, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, they're male-female winners. In every single category on the page except one, the male winner is listed first, then the female winner. Lindsey Kildow is the only exception in the entire list. No idea why, unless it's to support her claim that she was the first American to win there. -- AyaK (talk) 18:28, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Raises a more serious issue of lack of citation

[edit]

Upon reviewing AyaK's comment, and the article, there is no citation for the statement that Vonn was the first American to win at the Trofeo Topolino. Although this is favorable information, not libelous, it might be unfavorable to another skier who was actually the first American to win there. If it's nothing more than Vonn's personal claim, it's not reliably sourced. If someone cannot substantiate this claim through reliable sources within a reasonable period of time, the claim of being the first American to win should be deleted, though the victory itself is well-sourced by AyaK (and that citation could be added in the absence of substantiation of the greater "first American" claim). Unimaginative Username (talk) 07:17, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I know she and McDonald won on the same weekend, and so they were the first two Americans to win the Topolino, but I haven't been able to find any source that tells me which one won first. Thus, under WP:RS, I think we have to say that, in 1999, she and McDonald became the first two Americans to win the Topolino, unless we're able to find a authoritative source that definitely says she won before McDonald. Thank you for pushing this issue, because I was just going to let it drop. -- AyaK (talk) 14:02, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we can't have unsubstantiated claims whose only source is the subject itself, can we? <wink>. Unimaginative Username (talk) 03:13, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yearly Articles?

[edit]

I want to know if you all would like me to work on this page like I did on the Roger Federer one? I got that one to GA status, which is well on its way to FA in about two to three months!BLUEDOGTN 21:05, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Any editor is welcome to work on any article, in good faith, to improve the article. There is no "you all" here; no one "owns" any WP article. So you don't need anyone's approval or request to try to get the article promoted. If it interests you, have at it! .... btw, if we're playing "big dog", this editor got an article from GA *nominee* to FA *approved* in twelve days .... since you brought it up. <wink> (That scientific article's most frequent and knowledgeable editors were blazingly fast in their response to issues raised, which is where the real credit goes.) Third World Cup Overall Title?

It's probably true that there are better photos. The problem is that most of them are copyrighted. It's a little more difficult to find one that's both better and either public domain or released with the proper permissions. I'm not saying that it's impossible, it's just not as easy as it sounds.--Cube lurker (talk) 18:55, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article also says she speaks fluent German; I just saw an interview ( http://sport.orf.at/stories/2266555/2266556/ ) and you can clearly hear she is no way fluent or American accent free in German. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.34.141.148 (talk) 08:52, 13 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Christmas Eve, 2013 update!

[edit]

Lindsey doesn't stay at home of her friend Maria Riesch in Garmisch anymore. First of all, she lives in Sölden, Austria in winter, second she's already divorced from Thomas Vonn, so they don't spent Christmas Eves at the Riesch home. Please correct that. Also, please update Lindsey's 2013-season. A lot of things happened, e.g. her sickness, her stay at a hospital in Vail, her depressions and her break now. --Honeyking (talk) 17:03, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lindsey Vonn puts comeback on hold

[edit]

"Lindsey Vonn puts comeback on hold after training crash" is the headline:
http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/22/sport/skiing-vonn-injury-comeback/index.html
She will be back in the spring. — Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 22:56, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The wiki article mentions the injury already. The news article does not state that she wont be back until spring. She says she hopes to race at Lake Louise which is an early season race. Headline is sort of misleading. XFEM Skier (talk) 07:29, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We'll see. Wikipedia is encyclopedic, not leading news. Thanks, Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 03:03, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lindsey Vonn is smiling!

[edit]

Champion skier Vonn is pleased with recovery progress. She didn't compete yet, but might this weekend in Beaver Creek.

  • Headline: "Skier Lindsey Vonn says she has returned to snow after injury..."
  • Text: " Lindsey Vonn squeezed in a little freeskiing on Thanksgiving morning, a step in the right direction for a return to racing after reinjuring her right knee in a recent training crash. The reigning Olympic downhill champion posted on her Facebook page Thursday...smiling..."
  • Vonn needs just three more wins to match Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proell's record of 62 World Cup race victories.
  • "I'm very thankful for many things this year (family, loved ones, great fans) but at this moment I'm happy to be on the mountain doing what I love — skiing!!" she posted.
  • Check articles for her million-dollar smile:

Austria?

[edit]

"In the summer she is known to train in Austria, Chile, and New Zealand.[61]"

My guess is that "Austria" should be "Australia" for the obvious reason.

I tried to check this by following the reference given here, but the reference contains NO MENTION of either Austria or Australia. It also does not mention any locations for summer training.

I suggest that this sentence be removed from the article. ---Dagme (talk) 14:59, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

She is known to train at the Red Bull facility that is located in Austria, dry land training. XFEM Skier (talk) 20:34, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There should be a better source. I am guessing the NBC documentary will have something about. But here is the first source I found [1] I did not add it because I question if it rises to the level of WP:RS. XFEM Skier (talk) 20:38, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Some other notes

[edit]

It is not fair to make head-to-head records with recent female racers (like Annemarie Moser-Pröll) because there were degorations when Mrs. Moser (and others) skied in the 1970ies and there were no Alpine Combinations before 1974/75 and no Super-Gs before 1982/83. In general, it is not fair to compare in all kinds of sports. - I think Lindsey's records have to be seen as very glorious, her performance is excellent and unsurpassable. It's too bad, that she is injured anew. If you would try to find a macule you could make mention of missing the FIS Alpine Record for 2,000 points in a season in 2011/12 (2,000 points were established by Hermann Maier in 1999/2000, but in the meantime, Tina Maze could surpass with 2,414 points in 2012/13). Lindsey was unlucky twice in the mentioned final 2011/12 in Schladming; before final race (giant slalom) she (having 1,908 points) couldn't win the Super-G on March 18th; clocked with the best split time she made a bad mistake and throwing away the chance to earn 100 points for the victory which had been enough to make sure a new record. She finished 6th, bonified with 40 points - In the following slalom she finished 8th (32 points). If she had finished 12th in the giant slalom she could catch 22 points, finishing 11th she could catch 20 points. - At last, Lindsey could only beat the female record of Janica Kostelić by 10 points. 213.225.13.137 (talk) 19:58, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Last Names

[edit]

She changed her last name halfway through her career, so it seems appropriate to use "Kildow" when talking about those life events which preceded the name change. That name change happened, admittedly, when she married a man named Vonn. But she was already famous when she got married. Timothy Horrigan (talk) 21:49, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@TimothyHorrigan: Agreed. Naming should follow chronology. Referring to a 'Vonn' pre-2008 seems very misleading. I looked up Wikipedia guidelines on this issue and did not find anything (except for article title changes), so I looked up precedent. The most famous example is naturally Muhammad Ali, which uses his older name (Clay) for the corresponding older passages. Other notables examples would be looking at the names of Popes in recent times, these articles also follow similar chronological naming convention; see Pope Francis (Bergoglio) and his predecessors. — DA1 (talk) 00:30, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, without any consent of the community he deleted the table of podiums in the world cup in the infobox which in this article had lasted for 4 years from 3 February 2018 (see here). Years in which the user has quietly edited the page accepting this situation and therefore overturning the status quo for his unilateral decision.
