Fatty acid synthesis depends on Acetyl-CoA. Acetyl-CoA is used in ATP synthesis as required in the Mitochondria or to make fatty acids. If there isn't great demand for ATP then there is more available Acetyle-CoA to make fatty acids ie if a person doesn't move much but takes in carbohydrates the end result is more fatty acids are produced because of the low demand for ATP. In other words if a person doesn't need ATP, Acetyl-CoA is still produced regardless and the person just gets fatter. Someone should re-write this in more science-y language. SO it's mor related to the Kreb's cycle and should be seperate from lipogenesis

It should be noted that Stryer's 5th edition Biochemistry textbook doesn't contain one mention of lipogenesis, and is a book pretty much dominated by the concept of biochemical evolution. I suggest therefore the term may simply be relevent to lower order mammals (such as lab rats). I'm not a biochemist, but from what I can tell, lipogenesis is fairly relevant to the process of hibernation, and why the heart & brain more or less shut down.

I'm not sure what to put on this page, but someone with more knowledge on the subject (and a better writing capacity) may wish to mention something. 67.175.235.76 (talk) 20:30, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merging of Lipogenesis and Fatty acid synthesis

Vote: No: In my opinion they should stay seperate articles since fatty acid synthesis is a topic big enough to get it's article. Instead of the merging there should be a section in the Lipogenesis article that briefly explains the synthesis of fatty acids and provides a link to the main article. Vote: No: I agree with the above poster as there is more then enough information on FAS but there should be a link to Fatty Acid syntase because obviously this is key, There needs to be much more information included in the FAS page and then you will see how it really belongs on its own page.

Clean up/rewrite of Fatty Acid Esterification section

I tried to understand what this section was saying and it was quite dense. From what I understood of it, the section isn't very relevant to the topic. In fact the whole section is the copy-pasted abstract of a 1963 article in the Journal of Lipid Research. (http://www.jlr.org/content/4/3/312.abstract) This doesn't add anything of value to the article. It was inserted by someone in India (according to a Whois search) nearly 2 years ago. I suggest it be removed or at least completely rewritten to be relevant to the topic. I'll work on this soon (meaning between classes) if no one objects. Clean up and citations

I agree with the comment above about the Fatty Acid Esterification section, it is just a copy of the abstract of the article cited. This would definitely need some rework, there maybe some useful information relevant to the topic but that would require going through the article. Triglyceride syntesis

I believe we agree that Lipogenesis is something more than fatty acid synthesis. It is not a synonym of fatty acid synthesis. Otherwise, a separate article would not be necessary. It encompasses two processes:

The first process is discussed in detail in a separate article. It should be only summarized here. On the contrary, I can't find a main article in which the second process is discussed in detail. Perhaps, it should be discussed here...

In this article, however, the section about triglyceride synthesis is just an incomplete summary, while the section about fatty acid synthesis is too detailed.
