Updated Photos[edit]

If anyone knows how to upload photos onto wikipedia, possibly a photo from this link would be more appropriate for Dr. Bluford since all the other astronauts are either in space suits or astronaut jumpsuits. http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/bluford-gs.html

Ed Dwight[edit]

Ed Dwight, who is now a renowned sculptor, was picked by the Kennedy administration to train as an astronaut in 1962, thus making him the first African-American astronaut. I suggest adding him. Thanks.

The Hyphen[edit]

The name of this list has been moved from African American to African-American to African American and back to African-American: three moves so far. Please stop it. It's completely unimportant whether there's a hyphen or not. And given that the list contains a Cuban cosmonaut (who is "American" in one, broad sense, but not in the sense usually used for African American), and might in the future be expanded to include black astronauts or cosmonauts from African countries, perhaps the best thing to do would be to change it to "List of black astronauts". Mandla Maseko[edit]

I don't think he's qualified for the list yet but it is worth making a note that Mandla Maseko is set to become the first black African to travel into space (although not the first African). Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez[edit]

Shouldn't this list start with the first black person in space, Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez? Right now he's consigned to the end, almost as an afterthought. I don't this is fair given his achievement.
