Hey[edit]

Hey y'all. I created this page today because I discovered in school today, that no page on Civil War Generals existed. I have gone online and gotten a considerable lengthed list compiled, and will probably be working on this for all of a week or two. Any additions would be greatly appreciated, and, if some people would be willing to do bio's on some of the Generals, that would also help a ton. [[User:Drva1226|] 21:48, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

(Kristin Catando: 10)One of the civil war heroes were William Harvey Carney. He was greatly appreciated because of his act of kindness, pride, and care for others and the American flag. When the war broke out he made sure that even if he or someone was shot, the flag would not touch the ground. carney was wounded three times and still managed to keep the flag held high. List[edit]

Nice work on the list. I just renamed it to conform to Wikipedia naming conventions for List articles. I find it interesting that all of the red links are on the Union side. We have some busy Rebels out there. :-) Hal Jespersen 00:44, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many of the Confederate generals are on the Union side which, has all of the letters of the alphabet while, the Confederate side only goes to L.Some of the entries aren't even generals,among other things. Robert Luna III 13:09 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Personnaly, I think it would be better to list them all alphabetically, without regard to wether they were union or confederate. That way if yuo wanted to find a name you could go to A and find it rather than try and determine if they where union or confederate. I believe the reason some where not generals is due to the fact that they may not have remained a general after the war. Suggestion[edit]

Do to the length of this list I would like to either combine both confederate and union generals into one table like list broken down by Last Name alphabetically or split it into 2 lists, 1 for Union and the other for confederate. I have cleaned up, consolidated and added info to this as a list. Brevet generals - in, out or marked?[edit]

What's this list's strategy in regard to Union brevet generals? In particular, should the list include those listed on "Brevet Generals", which is listed in the references? I have a reference to a brevet general called William Cooper Talley, who's listed in the list of brevets, and also described on [1], but not on the article's list. Should he be added?

Note - my opinion after finding so many brevet generals on the Union side, many of which were only breveted after active service ended, is that their inclusion is doubtful, and a distinction should probably be drawn (and marked) between brevets and non-brevets. But whatever the consensus is, I'm happy to abide by it and help make the article consistent with it. --Alvestrand (talk) 09:32, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am progressively adding them as listed in Hunt/Brown's Brevet Brigadier Generals in Blue, but only those who have pre-existing wikipedia articles; otherwise, this article would become full of red-links. Commissioned generals without articles I am leaving (or adding if they aren't included), but I am limiting brevets. I'm also adding the ranks for many for whom they were not previously included for some reason (Lafayette Baker, for example) and correcting those which are incorrect (i.e. John Buford).

Article size[edit]

I just noticed the size of this article and I have a recommendation. I think due to the size the article we should think about splitting it. At the very least we should probably split it into two, one for Union and one for confederate but possibly even further into those who received regular appointments to general and who received brevets. --Kumioko (talk) 02:35, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Icarus(Phoenix) plans to make the split in the near future. I will rewrite the introductions to fit each one. They will have some overlap but also will have some material that is not in common. I think these are lists that need, or at least are improved by, some introduction. I have been preparing a separate list of Union brevet generals but I was set back several days by a computer problem and lost about a week's worth of work - mostly on that list - in addition. At least we are making steady progress toward completion of the list(s) and can see having a reasonably complete article or articles in the near future.Donner60 (talk) 19:39, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of addition of George B. Boomer as a Union brevet brigadier general.[edit]

Colonel Boomer led a brigade between February 12, 1863 and May 22, 1863 when he was killed in the Vicksburg campaign. Nonetheless, none of the authoritative sources of substantive rank or brevet rank generals show him as receiving a promotion to or brevet award of general officer rank. Intended Review and Possible Revision to Introductory Article Due to Division Into Two Lists[edit]

I will review this article as soon as possible to see if changes should be made in order to more closely describe the list of generals as two separate lists. I also think that a few minor changes in the description of the lists or of the generals as a group may be needed. I also have been working intermittently on a separate list of brevet generals which I will add when I insert all of the details. I have all of the names and ranks in a document but I intend to add dates and a few other details so that a reasonably complete article is submitted rather than one which needs many details still to be added.Donner60 (talk) 05:27, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Matthew Perry (General)[edit]

According to the sources in the article Perry, Florida he was 14th governor of Florida, and a Civil War General. He should not be confused with Commodore Matthew Perry. He doesn't seem to be listed anywhere here that I could find. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 17:12, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He's not listed because a) There was no general in the Civil War, on either side, by rank or by brevet, named Matthew Perry; b) the article on Perry, Florida is correct that the county was named four the state's 14th governor, but incorrect in the name of the governor; that Governor was Edward A. Perry, not Matthew Perry; c) That general, Edward Aylesworth Perry, is listed where he should be, right here: List of American Civil War Generals (Confederate). --IcarusPhoenix (talk) 05:20, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote a reply at the same time as IcarusPhoenix's reply. Although that reply answers the question, I add this because I include the references for the lists of Confederate and Union generals and Confederate colonels. Edward Aylesworth Perry was the 14th Governor of Florida and was a Confederate general. His name is on the list of Confederate generals and the list of Florida governors. There was no Confederate general or Confederate colonel named Matthew Perry. Although it is unlikely a Florida town would have been named after a Union general, there also was no Union general or brevet general named Matthew Perry. References: Allardice, Bruce S.
