Red links and non links[edit]

Red links i.e. links to articles which do not exist, and entries which are not linked at all - both have no place in this article. It should only list bands / individuals which have Wikipedia articles. Discuss... --Simple Bob (talk) 21:45, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am in the process of writing a major update for this page, some of which I "trialled" in the edits you undid on 21st and 22nd October. I can understand your antipathy to red links and I apologise for any you feel unnecessary. Due to the large number of updates I have planned (including new entries for bands/individuals) I took my lead from other Wiki pages where red links have been added and expanded upon at a later date. I shall endeavour to keep red links to a minimum, and you are of course entitled to remove any that may offend you. Alas not all Bristol bands have sufficient longevity/importance to merit a full Wiki entry, however they are still Bristol bands and I will try to include a link to somewhere like http://www.bristolarchiverecords.com/, http://www.discogs.com/, http://www.allmusic.com/ or http://www.last.fm/ for them. There are an amazing number of bands linked to Bristol (and the surrounding area) in one way or another, and where possible I am ensuring their Wiki pages have a link to this list. I hope you will do the same with any Bristol band entries you come across. Cogoal (talk) 16:38, 23 October 2009 (UTC)cogoal[reply]

I think that a reasonable approach is to have redlinks in the body of the article in the entry for another band e.g. as Art Objects and The Stingrays are listed at the moment. This should only be done *if* there is the intent to create the article at some point in the future. However, if a band isn't notable enough to have its own article then it shouldn't be linked. There is a good writeup on this in Wikipedia:Write the Article First. --Simple Bob (talk) 21:39, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think I can live with your suggestions regarding the redlinks, however there is still the issue of Bristol bands that have insufficient longevity/importance to merit a full Wiki entry. As they are still Bristol bands, I believe they should still be on the list, but they would have no link, red, blue or otherwise! What would you suggest would be the most appropriate way of including them in this list? Cogoal (talk) 16:26, 25 October 2009 (UTC)cogoal[reply]

I have reverted Simple Bob's recent deletion of red links and the information accompanying them. The essay referred to above is just that - an essay containing the opinions of one editor. It is not Wikipedia policy. Jezhotwells (talk) 08:34, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jezhotwells for clarifying what is, and is not, Wikipedia policy. I will still endeavour to keep red links to a minimum, but now feel able to update with more entries, subject to my intention to write articles at a later date (within a couple of months or so). It will also come in useful for my new article on a List of Record Labels from Bristol, which I'm just about to upload. Cogoal (talk) 13:18, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that Day One (band) is in the category of Category:Music from Bristol, England, but not in this article. Is that an oversight? --Simple Bob (talk) 16:40, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, not an oversight, however as I believe there maybe several hundred other entries for this list, it's a question of having to work slowly through them. They are on my very long list, however my priority for this first major update was to flesh out the existing entries and add a few more that were already written. I'm sure I'll eventually get around to them, but if in the meantime you want to add them, please be my guest.
Also, just to let you know my ethos; where a band is linked to their profile I don't intend to provide references, I would expect them to be in the profile. I have included the "teasers" in the band summaries, to hopefully encourage people to read the full profiles, or to check out other Wiki pages. I will be providing references for bands that don't already have a Wiki profile, do you think that appropriate? Please also see my 25 October response to your remarks on Red links and non links. Name of article, or rather its contents[edit]

I don't think bands that aren't from Bristol or very close areas like Portishead should be included in the list. For example, Bath is Somerset, not South Gloucestshire. The name should perhaps be changed to something more suiting and then, such reflection could include bands from other surrounding areas. --Lewi6400youtubeChannel (talk) 17:27, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion of other local bands[edit]

For the Record - not sure if this band fulfils notability criteria but it is a v popular Bristol Band - www.for-the-record.co.uk
