Its up to you to write the next great Wikipedia entry about a Bates alumni. Lets build an encyclopedia.

There are FAR too many redlinked and unsourced "notable" individuals on this article. Such a collection makes it difficult to decipher which are valid versus which are hoax or non-notable. Please work on updating this article as soon as possible. --Kukini hablame aqui 16:11, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added a few more external source links to various "redlinked" individuals, hope this helps in the deciphering to determine notability. Swampyank 00:01, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do we need the list of people that have received honorary degrees from Bates? They are not Bates people, and do not reflect the educational and academic prowress of the school. This page, IMHO, should only include those that did their undergraduate work at Bates and graduated from there. To list Jimmy Carter, for example, just because he was president and received an LLD from Bates does not mean he is a Bates notable.Trucker11 (talk) 14:43, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Unless someone has a good argument against it, I'll be bold and remove that list. Bro2baseball (talk) 04:55, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Light bulb iconB Actually to address your redlink concerns, click on the red link and create a new article. Most of the (very few) red linked-subjects are notable enough for their very own articles. Someone just needs to make them. We should all be here to build an encyclopedia. AINeArbO (talk) 02:16, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Number of Bates Alumni in U.S. Congress

[edit]

There are 10 Bobcats 12 Bobcats on Capital Hill (and counting!).

There have been ten members 12 members of the United States Congress that are counted as alumni of Bates College (as of the 2018 U.S. midterm elections). They are:

  1. John P. Swasey (Class of 1859)
  2. Daniel J. McGillicuddy (Class of 1881)
  3. Carroll L. Beedy (Class of 1903)
  4. Charles Clason (Class of 1911)
  5. Donald Partridge (Class of 1914)
  6. Edmund Muskie (Class of 1936)
  7. Frank Coffin (Class of 1940)
  8. + Robert F. Kennedy (Class of 1944)
  9. + Leo Ryan (Class of 1944)
  10. Robert Goodlatte (Class of 1974)
  11. Ben Cline (Class of 1994)
  12. Jared Golden (Class of 2011)

The only complete listing of all the alumni in Congress was published in November 2018, right here. This is the most reliable source out there for such a number. But what about Robert F. Kennedy, the alumni who received a V-12 degree in 1945? What about him? The source clearly states: "Edmund Muskie ’36 of Maine is the sole alumnus to serve as a U.S. senator." Case closed. There are sources linking him to being Attorney General, that should be good enough to have him featured on List of Bates College people article. AINeArbO (talk) 04:58, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Swampyank, I hope you understand. I know your edits were in good faith. AINeArbO (talk) 04:59, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The source doesn't seem to be existent, and the footnotes for all of those people were removed and now seem to be inaccurate. Even if some sources disagree, there's no dispute about RFK attending Bates (see definition of alumni (not a graduate)) as part of the V-12 program (see http://www.bates.edu/150-years/months/july/navy-arrives/), and no dispute about him serving as a senator (see RFK's wiki article). Just because a source exists and is inaccurate, doesn't mean that it should supercede all others. We should be seeking the truth. Swampyank (talk) 18:16, 17 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done: I thought that might be what you would argue. Okay, restored the section, updated tally. Will add Leo Ryan ('44) as well. Thank you talking this out on the talk. Closing. AINeArbO (talk) 18:41, 17 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
