Merger proposal - List of climate research satellites[edit]

Greetings,

I propose to merge List of climate research satellites into this article, as there is significant redundancy between the two articles, and it looks like the "climate research" article is not regularly updated. Climate research is certainly a major reason Earth observation satellites exist, so I don't know that having a list of "Earth Observing" satellites in one article, and then a subset of that list in its own article, really adds anything.

That being said, the table format in the "climate research satellites" article is much preferable in style to the way this article is currently laid out. So if there's no objection to a merger, I would try to merge that table style into this article.

Thoughts?

  • Support: I agree with Skyraider1's view that the climate list greatly overlaps with this list and that it is not as well maintained. My view is that merging to the Scientific Research section would work well; other types of merge would also be fine. Klbrain (talk) 04:16, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganization of "List of Earth observation satellites" (September 2021)[edit]

Hello, I've started on a massive reorganization of this page. I'm going to update the existing sortable table and add sortable tables, in order to group the satellites according to:

1) Government (public domain) (a) Active (b) Inactive (c) Planned

2) Commercial (private domain) (a) Active (b) Inactive

I'm going to focus mainly on satellites that are currently operational, while retaining past and future satellites in the list where they already exist and the information is accurate as of 2021. Please feel free to help with the reorganization or post suggestions here. Thank you. Jturner20 (talk) 18:09, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Inconclusive List" Banner Suggestion[edit]

Hello,

I propose the list needs a banner or disclaimer above it stating that this list is not conclusive for all Earth observation satellites. I can think of one mission that is missing (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program). I'm sure there are others and without that banner/disclaimer, I fear the page is misleading.

HotSat-1[edit]

A new satellite has recorded detailed images of Earth's surface temperature, but it is not included in the list here. Does Wikipedia not have an article about this satellite? Jarble (talk) 01:02, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
