Bolding

[edit]

The listing in bold of teams who owned the top scorer doesn't seem too relevant. Would anyone object if I changed it to putting teams who won The Double in bold instead? Oldelpaso 19:09, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The teams in bold are now double winners. Oldelpaso 20:46, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the information in English football (Tier one) has been merged. I think it is now ready to turn it into a redirect. Some information has not been merged for the following reasons: Logos - repeated use of club logos does not qualify as fair use. Third place finishes are not included as I don't regard them as particularly notable in a list of winners, it is unlikely that a club would list a third place in their club honours. In any case, both this and the number of teams participating can be deduced from the appropriate Season in English football article, e.g. 1888-89 in English football. A similar rationale applies to the list of top three finishes by club. If there are no objections in a few days time I will turn English football (Tier one) into a redirect. Oldelpaso 11:40, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the bolding is inaccurate during the Premier League period. Most of the team in bold didn't win the double. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.2.184.150 (talk) 09:28, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Individual records

[edit]

It might be an idea to include a list of individual records. One containing players who have won the most top tier English league titles and another with the all time top scorers in the top tier of English football. There is something similar to this on the Serie A page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 213.202.164.129 (talkcontribs) 14:16, 3 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Doubles and trebles

[edit]

I think this section is pretty misleading. Everyone in English football knows that "the double" means winning the league and the FA Cup. Nobody would ever describe winning the league and some other cup as a "double". (Well, only those who perhaps wish to falsely imply that achieving that feat is equal to the real double. ;)) "The treble" is similarly iffy in that it's only really happened once and so lacks the definitive historical connotation that "the double" has. Any thoughts? -- Hux 17:04, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree, the only thing that should be worth noting in bold is the true double, League and FA Cup, or Man U's treble. That's the "default" definition of the term. Grant.alpaugh 17:13, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A treble is a treble. Liverpool in 2001. 194.75.129.200 12:59, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

i dont think liverpools mickey mouse treble is worth a mention.--Numberwang 19:30, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The webpage is about English football champions, so I dont think European wins should be mentioned here at all. Add a footnote to mark teams that have won multiple trophies (including League cup if you like).90.217.58.37 (talk) 16:33, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List by city

[edit]

This list is a bit spurious in my opinion. First, there are relatively few cities that have more than one different winner. Second, if Man Utd is in Manchester (the stadium is in Stretford, in the Metropilitan Borough of Trafford) then West Brom should be listed as Birmingham, and maybe even Burnley and Blackburn listed together. 90.217.58.37 (talk) 16:28, 18 October 2010 (UTC)hsomers[reply]

Yeh and the fact of none of the teams are actually in the city of London not even the capital Westminster City either!! 31.94.0.234 (talk) 19:28, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List by county

[edit]

I'm removing this list as it is somewhat anachronistic (and possibly a little cruftish). The metropolitan counties are fairly recent creations. For example the Liverpool and Manchester clubs were regarded as Lancashire clubs for much of their history. Oldelpaso 20:56, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed - the border changes in 1974 create too many problems. Wolves and West Bromwich Albion to name but two are now in a different county from when they won their titles. --Jameboy 11:33, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Removed again. --Jameboy (talk) 01:51, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Man City's double

[edit]

Does Man City's league cup and UEFA Cup double have a place on this page? Yes, it's a double, but this is a page about English football league champions, and there is no league title win in there. Peanut4 (talk) 10:00, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. Our double didn't involve being English champions, so it shouldn't be part of this article. Oldelpaso (talk) 17:05, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any room to add some kind of trivia to this section, or oddities? As an Everton fan I am aware Everton were champions on both occasions war broke out (champions 1914/15 and 1938/39). I would appreciate other oddities so this section can be added.Dmcm2008 (talk) 11:17, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia isn't a place for oddities and trivia, it is an encyclopedia after all. Peanut4 (talk) 14:27, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well if that's the case no need to put the 8 teams who finished runners up without winning the league especially if you're leaving out Bolton Wanderers who've finished in the top 3 more times than any other team without winning the league!! 31.94.0.234 (talk) 19:31, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

English Div 1 top scorer 1935–36

[edit]

I have corrected the top scorer for 1935–36. It was previously stated that three players were tied on 31 goals, but in fact W. G. Richardson scored 39 Div 1 goals that season. The folowing web references support this (in addition to several printed sources): [1] [2] [3]. I have also asked rsssf.com to correct their page. --Jameboy (talk) 14:05, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Title wins by decade

[edit]

The Title wins by decade section was added yesterday. I reverted it because it was totally out of keeping in style with the rest of the article. Since it's a featured list, I would suggest such significant changes should be discussed here first. But the edit has been added again. Instead of getting into a lame edit war, I'll be the first to bring it here. Does anyone have any thoughts on the change, or any improvements that can be made to it? Peanut4 (talk) 19:02, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There are several links which are not going to the right places can someone change them please.

Which links? Peanut4 (talk) 20:31, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Every Link

I've corrected one before your last comment, and otherwise they all seem right to me. Can you give a bit more help on which are wrong and why. Peanut4 (talk) 21:46, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FA Cup

[edit]

Given that the page is titled "English football champions", not "English league football champions", should the FA Cup winners 1872-88 appear also? EamonnPKeane (talk) 21:59, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. FA Cup winners were considered the champions of England prior to league football. We should add those as you suggest or rename the article. Let's get more input on this. --Jameboy (talk) 00:12, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Successive Winners

[edit]

I'd like to propose a section on teams who have won the title in successive years (at a glance Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United, Portsmouth, Wolves, Chelsea; plus the hat-trick winners) and hat-tricks of three wins in a row - (Huddersfield, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United (twice)). Minutefong (talk) 10:53, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Leading scorers

[edit]

Leading league goalscorer is not an attribute of the English football champions, since the leading goalscorer can come from any club, not necessarily the title winners. I suggest the leading league goalscorer be given its own list, maybe including the leading goalscorers from other divisions if space allows. --Jameboy (talk) 13:01, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Total titles

[edit]

The tables by region are Wikipedia:SYN#Synthesis_of_published_material_that_advances_a_position, it combines to sets of facts to reach a conclusion Gnevin (talk) 13:13, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I'll remove it. – PeeJay 12:25, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Droughts

[edit]

I included table regarding how many years club last won a championship in the top flight, Its done in the style of those post-season drought articles for American sports. 31.209.153.12 (talk) 02:59, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

First time winners

[edit]

How come we don't put (1) after the first title that a team wins, but we do put (2), (3), (4) etc for subsequent titles? It looks a little odd.  — Amakuru (talk) 20:40, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well the implication is that without a figure, it's the first win; it looks fine to me. --Super Nintendo Chalmers (talk) 21:18, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The season top scorers column

[edit]

I agree with the comment made by User:Jameboy back in 2010 (diff link).

The list of PL seasons is generally a better place for info such as the scorers, and already contains them. I suggest either expanding that list to include the seasons, and scorers, from before the PL era, or creating a separate list for them. For this article, I suggest a column of the winning managers instead: they, too, are "English football champions" (always). --Theurgist (talk) 04:45, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I said and did all sorts of crazy things back in 2010. But yeah, I (still) agree. --Jameboy (talk) 09:36, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, there's List of English football championship-winning managers and List of English football first tier top scorers. Maybe merge the former one into this one and expand the latter one? --Theurgist (talk) 00:03, 14 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of winners by city/town

[edit]

I'm confused about this section. If Manchester United and Nottingham Forest are actually based in Old Trafford and West Bridgford respectively, why are they under Manchester and Nottingham? Shouldn't we list them under their proper locations? 77.246.53.162 (talk) 12:38, 18 April 2019 (UTC) Believe it or not there are towns within cities and suburbs within towns. If I lived in Fulham you wouldn't say "You don't live in London, that's not the proper place you live in" would you? 07:55, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wording

[edit]

Goal for and goals again is call goal difference, not goals average. Change it. They do not divide one to the other. 108.204.121.198 (talk) 00:36, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Arsenal

[edit]

The section on Arsenal's title has been vandalised twice (4 June), not sure how to restore to the previous edits.

This was taken care of by PeachyBum07 on June 5. How to do reverts is explained here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Reverting - Wikkiwonkk (talk) 17:02, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted vandalism by anonymous/83.110.128.129 to last revision by Koshchki123

[edit]

They made two sloppy edits that changed the current champions in the infobox and the 2022-23 champions in the table to Arsenal. I don't know if this related to the Arsenal related vandalism back in early June (see above section). - Wikkiwonkk (talk) 17:10, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction

[edit]

The introduction states that Manchester United dominated english football in the noughties but for me the decade was a lot more varied than that, you first had peak-Wenger and the Invincibles and then at least 2 seasons (back to back) dominated by Chelsea. Personally I'd say United dominated parts of the decade but by no means all of it. Just wondered if anyone else had any other thoughts on this. Firestar47 (talk) 22:30, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Awkwardness of introduction of the UEFA Conference League/UEFA Cup including Europa League/Cup Winners Cup

[edit]

Makes it a bit awkward now doesn't it as the Conference League is the equivalent to the UEFA Cup and the Europa League is the equivalent to the Cup Winners Cup!! Rather than the Europa League being the equivalent of both cups?? 31.94.0.234 (talk) 19:23, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bolton Wanderers FACT

[edit]

Why take out the fact that they've finished in the top 3 more times than any other team without winning the title?? This is not disruptive but a fact!! So why am i blocked?? 31.94.0.234 (talk) 19:26, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@31.94.0.234: It was removed because it was unsourced. And you're not blocked, there are no restrictions in place on your IP address. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:48, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
